Have you ever wondered how to market to a duck? 🦆
We know that ducks aren't like other animals.
They can fly, swim, and also walk.
UWOWWWW 😱
But we can’t assume that ducks need what other animals need.
Ducks are also an excellent metaphor for our customers.
But how do we get them to notice us?
Here's how to create a content strategy for duck 👇
Quack! Quack! Quack! 🦆
Over four years ago, I began a project with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to lead public engagement on the future management of Western Wyoming’s elk feedgrounds. At the time, it was labeled “the most contentious wildlife issue in North America.” While the biological, social, ecological, and economic issues collided to make it vastly complicated, the biggest challenge wasn't the complexity itself. It was a false belief that the issue was simple and could be solved with a binary, open-or-closed solution.
We engaged with hundreds of interested individuals through dozens of public meetings, one-on-one conversations, focus groups, and online commenting. While our efforts were designed to share and gather meaningful information, they were also aimed at challenging this binary thinking. We asked tough questions, shared candid concerns, and earnestly sought creative solutions. The goal wasn't just crafting a practical management plan; it was moving people beyond black-and-white positions to appreciate the issue's complexity.
At their March meeting, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission approved the Elk Feedgrounds Management Plan, guided by our public engagement work.
This project reinforced the fact that complex problems have no silver bullets or singular solutions. When faced with complexity, we need to resist the enticement of oversimplification; by seeking out diverse and divergent viewpoints is our only hope for meaningful solutions.
Like many other large-scale public engagement efforts I have facilitated, this project was an immense - and immensely satisfying! - challenge. It was also a great reminder to appreciate complexity, and have patience with the process!
