In recent times, there's been an unhealthy global obsession with SUVs, a trend that's also reflected in India. This is problematic, especially when people purchase SUVs without a real need, driven by status rather than practicality, leading to higher costs and challenges in urban settings. Here are reasons to reconsider buying an SUV: ✅ Size and Maneuverability: SUVs are generally larger than sedans or hatchbacks, making them harder to maneuver in tight spaces, such as city streets or parking lots. This size can also be intimidating for some drivers, especially those used to smaller cars. ✅ Fuel Efficiency: SUVs tend to consume more fuel compared to smaller vehicles. Their larger engines and heavier weight contribute to lower fuel efficiency, leading to higher fuel costs and a larger carbon footprint. ✅ Higher Costs: SUVs are often more expensive to purchase, insure, and maintain than smaller cars. The initial purchase price is typically higher, and insurance premiums can be more expensive due to their size and the potential for greater damage in accidents. ✅ Driving Dynamics: The larger size and higher center of gravity of SUVs can make them more prone to rollovers and less agile than smaller cars. This can affect handling, particularly in sharp turns or emergency maneuvers. ✅ Off-Road Capabilities vs. Actual Use: Many SUVs are equipped for off-roading, but most drivers rarely use these features. In urban or suburban areas, these capabilities are often unnecessary, leading to higher costs and fuel consumption. For example, fewer than 10% of Range Rover owners regularly go off-road. But still there are reasons to buy one, an SUV is ideal for individuals or families needing ample space, versatility, and off-road capabilities, especially in rural areas with rough roads. It's practical for those with large families, frequent cargo needs, or outdoor enthusiasts who require towing power and durability. For these groups, an SUV's features perfectly match their lifestyle. However, many of the SUVs we see in the market today are just overpriced, jacked-up crossovers that don't truly live up to the "SUV" label. A "real SUV" is defined by its rugged design, true off-road capabilities, and practical utility, featuring body-on-frame construction, four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, durable suspension, and a powerful engine. Examples include the Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra Thar, and Toyota Fortuner. However, many manufacturers now label crossovers as SUVs by adding body cladding and raising the suspension, often with a steep price increase. Before opting for these jacked-up crossovers, consider test-driving a real sedan. You'll experience better driving dynamics, power, stability, and practicality, including ample boot space. Examples of quality sedans like the Virtus and Slavia offer true sedan characteristics with higher ground clearance than many of the so-called SUVs on the market. #Cars #SUV #Automobile

I dare to say that “compact SUVs” make sense. Before you jump down my throat and brand me as a "pseudo car-enthusiast," hear me out! In recent times, there has been a constant debate about the term "SUV" being diluted, with front-wheel drive, high-riding hatchbacks being labeled as SUVs. With my whole heart, I agree, the term SUV has been stretched quite a bit, but this 'evolution' is both inevitable and reasonable. If we move beyond the strict, on-paper definition of an SUV and look at the broader picture, we can see why this change makes sense. In the past, setting for vehicles that offered a high seating position and strong road presence often meant that body-on-frame construction, lower fuel efficiency, and higher upfront costs were also part of the package. These factors made them less practical for the average consumer. But with the "compact SUV" class coming up, people got access to the high seating position and road presence that they aspired, without sacrificing practicality. Compact SUVs are no doubt easier to drive and live with compared to traditional SUVs. While not everyone understands the dynamic disadvantages of a compact SUV compared to a sedan, many are drawn to features like higher ground clearance, a spacious cabin, and an elevated seating position. And it would be fair to say that consumers purchasing these high-riding hatchbacks are generally aware they are buying vehicles that are no way close to what a "true" SUV is, but they appreciate the balance of features offered. As car enthusiasts, we might wish the term "SUV" hadn't been diluted and that a different nameplate had been used for these vehicles. But ultimately, if consumers are happy with these vehicles, it makes perfect sense for brands to meet this demand.

These Jaguar rebrand discussions are a good reminder that brands exist in the mind of customers and the context of their sum interactions. So here’s mine… Yes Jaguar stands for a certain automotive luxury but it’s stuck in the 90’s/00’s for me. I see a dark green soft top convertible with tan leather interiors. But I couldn’t describe any of the more recent models nor recall seeing them recently on the streets. Unless we’re talking about those autonomous Waymo cars all over SF. The same Waymo that nearly increased it’s ridership 4X in the city so far this year. The ones that took early adopters on beta rides to now delighting gleeful tourists. Yeah those are Jaguar cars… which perhaps makes this rebrand not too far off from my current context.
