Over the Christmas holidays, Alina Wardzala and her 70-year-old father were brutally murdered by her husband, leaving behind three young children in the care of their grandmother. It is an epidemic that continues to claim lives, shatter families, and leave deep scars on survivors. As men, we have a responsibility to confront and dismantle the cultural and societal norms that enable domestic violence. This means holding ourselves and others accountable, promoting healthy relationships, and advocating for change. Policymakers also need to take this issue far more seriously. Strengthening support for survivors, increasing funding for prevention programs, and ensuring law enforcement and the justice system respond appropriately are critical steps to making a meaningful impact. (current restraining orders are an absolute joke and provide no protection to those trying to escape abusers) We owe it to families like Alina's to act urgently and compassionately. Reduced federal funding is affecting survivors nationwide, including in Massachusetts and at Stone House. The Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA) has made a critical VOCA Bridge funding request, advocating for the legislature to allocate $20M to help fund operations and services of the many agencies like Stone House that MOVA supports. If this bridge is NOT funded, Stone House will lose 17.6% of our anticipated funding, which could dangerously affect our clients and other survivors seeking services.
