More than half of retirees retired earlier than they had initially anticipated. Here are some reasons cited in this survey: "In the Transamerica report, nearly half of those who retired earlier than planned blamed their health: physical limitations, illness or disability. Roughly two-fifths blamed their jobs: They were laid off, downsized or lured into early retirement, or they were no longer happy at work." I'm currently working with a new client who works for big tech. He was told he could work anywhere...until now. They are forcing everyone to come back to a physical location, despite many (including him) who moved during the pandemic to have a better lifestyle. So what? He's now retiring 3 years earlier than anticipated with a ton of anxiety... Time to get to work.

Today marks the beginning of my last work week with the United States Marshal Service after 29 years of service and nearly 36 years in public service. As I approach the end of this chapter, I find myself surprisingly free of any anxiety or doubts. Instead, I look forward to a short work week and a retirement celebration. Retiring to do nothing is overrated Met with a “retiring” local executive last week They understood this The idea of having a “next chapter” It’s not the end of the book Like most, they’re currently working over 60 hours a week ❌ Going from 60 hours → 0 is crazy to them ✔️ The focus is on having the time and resources to do what they want We had a collaborative meeting and ran through some “What Ifs”: ◾ Full retirement, even if just to be their “base” scenario. ◾ Taking a few years off, then coming back to work ◾ Switching to part-time consulting for a while ◾ Where do their travel plans come in? ◾ Possible “long-term care” needs ◾ When to claim Social Security ◾ Downsizing vs not Other advisors had been quick to say “you’re good, don’t worry about it” instead of running collaborative planning sessions. The client is good at making decisions, they just needed an expert to make sure they didn’t miss anything and to handle the execution. I’m excited for their next chapter, and thankful to be working together!
