THE YEAR OF THE 'MAGNIFICENT SEVEN' Source: Statista https://lnkd.in/dfd5TBkC By Felix Richter “After a terrible 2022 for major tech companies and their shareholders, 2023 marked a return to form for the group of companies widely summarized as Big Tech” (see figure). The Big Seven grew 2 to 10 times the S&P 500. A truly magnificent result. It's worth winning the INNOspace Masters. Want an example? We'll give you two: For the InnoCubE project, two #DLR Challenge winners and overall winners have joined forces to realise a completely new #satellite concept. It will be tested in #orbit during an initial one-year mission at the end of 2024. Here are the two spin-in ideas combined in this project: - SKITH (Skip the harness) wireless satellite infrastructure, winner of the DLR Challenge and overall winner in 2016: Until now, the harness for satellites has been necessary, but also costly, heavy and a major risk factor. The SKITH wireless bus system connects all satellite components such as communications, OBC, ADCS, payload and PCDU. The system is both real-time and failsafe. - Wall#E – Fibre-Reinforced Spacecraft Walls for Storing Energy, DLR Challenge winner and overall winner in 2017: The idea behind Wall#E is to integrate energy storage functions into the support structures of #spacecraft, which will significantly reduce the mass and volume of satellites without sacrificing performance. To this end, Wall#E uses fibre-reinforced structures infiltrated with innovative solid-state battery materials. The project is being continued by the Technische Universität Berlin and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. It embodies two core objectives of the DLR Challenge and the #INNOspace Masters: promoting technology transfer between #space and non-space and collaborative research projects. Professor Francesco Topputo from the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology of Politecnico di Milano wins another grant from the European Research Council (ERC) with the project AXESS – “Accelerated X-in-the-Loop Environment for Spacecraft Systems Testing”. AXESS has been awarded the prestigious Proof-of-Concept (PoC), a grant accessible solely to the principal investigators of an ERC project. The objective of the PoC is to develop a Test-as-a-Service (TaaS) platform for simulating autonomous spacecraft technologies. This is the fourth ERC grant awarded to Prof. Topputo, after the €2M Consolidator Grant for EXTREMA – “Engineering Extremely Rare Events in Astrodynamics for Deep-Space Missions in Autonomy” of 2019, the 2021 PoC project SENSE – “A Sensor for Autonomous Navigation in Deep Space”, and the 2022 PoC project GUIDO – “A Computing Unit for Autonomous Spacecraft Guidance in Deep Space”. ℹ Read the full press release here https://lnkd.in/dWePR67Z #ERCPoC #DAER #AerospacePoliMi DART Team - Polimi

With great pleasure, I inform that I just attended and took part in Origin Antares®'s #Satellite_Propulsion_Webinar. This experience has been a fantastic way to learn more about satellite propulsion systems, which are an essential part of contemporary space exploration and technology. I got the opportunity to speak with business leaders who discussed the newest developments, difficulties, and advancements in satellite propulsion during the webinar. The talks gave participants a thorough grasp of how developments in propulsion technology will affect space missions going forward, with a particular emphasis on effectiveness, sustainability, and state-of-the-art performance. Finding the right balance between technology advancement and the real-world difficulties of space travel was one of the most beneficial things I took away from this experience. From the newest propulsion technology to tactics for addressing the particular difficulties of functioning in space, a wide range of topics were covered in the seminars. I am immensely appreciative to Origin Antares for planning such a thought-provoking gathering. It has been incredibly motivating to have the chance to network with like-minded people and pick the brains of industry leaders. My expertise has increased as a result of this experience, and my enthusiasm for the aerospace sector has grown. I'm excited to use the knowledge I learned from this webinar in upcoming projects and to contribute to the fascinating advancements in space technology as I pursue my career in aerospace. Many thanks to those who helped make this event so memorable—speakers, attendees, and organizers. #SatellitePropulsion #SpaceTechnology #ContinuousLearning #Aerospace #Innovation #OriginAntares

Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) vs. Customised In-House Development – which is the best approach for the space industry?🚀 Today, we see that access to space has expanded dramatically. Where once a few launch operators dominated, now companies like SpaceX, RocketLab, Orbex, Skyrora Ltd, and Firefly Aerospace are offering cheaper, faster access, enabling frequent trials of new technologies. 🌟 While traditional manufacturers have favoured in-house development for control and risk mitigation, COTS components are now revolutionising space tech by offering agility, speed, and performance guarantees. 🔍 Piers Olsen CEng, CEO of Olsen Actuators & Drives, shares his expert insights on this ongoing debate. Explore his perspective here: https://lnkd.in/ei66vNBw
