I'm excited to share the National Center on Education and the Economy's research brief on "Thinking Differently About Math". This easy-to-digest publication is written for #superintendents, #principals, #assistantprincipals, AND #teachers - and challenges us to rethink what is taught, how it's taught, and how students learn #math. 🍏 Download the brief here: http://bit.ly/nceemath PS: Watch out for short videos over the next two weeks where I break down some of the research and how it impacts practice.

The way that questions are typically asked in math classrooms discourage creativity and condition people to dislike the subject as a whole. Instead of having short, closed questions with a focus on correctness, ask open-ended questions and let students explore the possibilities. In the video below, Dr Jo Boaler at 3:10, explains a beautiful example of the transformative effect that comes from a simple change in the phrasing of a question. In my view, the visual aspect of math is core to its beauty. When students are given space to explore topics visually, they discover connections and their imaginations can play with its pieces to figure out why statements are true. I wrote the following article a while back on this topic if you are interested in reading more: https://lnkd.in/g2teWsMh #matheducation #creativity https://lnkd.in/gRdT3uhq
