The engineering industry operates heavily via word of mouth. One tiny rumour can turn into widespread thinking at the drop of a hat. But it’s important to give a site or an engineer, the benefit of the doubt. Meet them face to face and get to know them yourself before coming to any conclusions. Have you ever assumed a rumour was true, but then had your mind changed? #Engineering #Culture #Reputation

The Design and Delivery of Large Engineering Projects: Ideas Forum was a “masterclass” in #megaproject and #infrastructure #design and #delivery. I’ve followed 4 of the 5 hour of recording, which was captured over a 2 day online seminar. Suffice to say, the following #global organisations brought a stellar panel across #highways, #waterways, #ports, #railway, #airport, #bus, #realestate, #astronomy, #energy and #digital #engineering: - National Academy of Engineering - Royal Academy of Engineering - Canadian Academy of Engineering | L’Académie canadienne du génie - Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering My key takeaways were: 1. Systems thinking – Megaprojects require #systemsthinking. Mark Enzer highlighted that the #builtenvironment exists for people and environment, which in itself, is a vehicle for systems thinking. Megaprojects and infrastructure are components within this overall systems vehicle. 2. Consultation and engagement – All forms of megaprojects and infrastructure require good, ongoing #consultation and #engagement practice with #communities to be successful and ultimately avoid delay. 3. End goal – Focus on the 'Why', not just the 'What' and the 'How'. Across many speakers, one specific book and author was mentioned: “How Big Things Get Done” by Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg. 4. Behaviours – Organisational #culture is key. Lillian Borrone, for example, described how we must understand the changing mindset and work patterns across different generations, and Brenda Kenny suggested a Culture Task Force. 5. Models – can we be more #creative in contractual and delivery models, and can these models also adapt over time? New #data and studies on #deliverymodels (eg by UCL Juliano Denicol) show how. Other key #governance suggestions included a C-suite approach (over technical). Some key quotes from the Day 1 session are below (some paraphrased): · ‘the client is the ultimate influencer on projects’ - @John Armitt, UK NIC · ‘in a #polycrisis we will never find certainty as it's always changing, and rapidly in unexpected ways...makes planning almost impossible’ - Brenda Kenny, Canada West Foundation · ‘static’ proposition of organisational design…no clarity on the 'evolution of organisation' – Juliano Denicol, UCL · ‘codes and standards are not up to speed with #technology’ – Ahmad Abdelrazaq, Rise Global · 'doing your homework' - look at some of the best practices that are out there; lots of lessons learnt but we repeat approaches that might not always work - James Marzocca, Hatch · What is the ‘expectation timeline’ (a more realistic timeline)? – the #community has to be brought along; what are the points along that timeline to celebrate? - @Peter Quinn, University of Western Australia Recording to the seminar below: https://lnkd.in/eWxhd3mr

An Engineering Marvel: 👇👇This is the "Z" reversal in the Darjeeling Hill Railway at a place called Rangtong. Many of you would have enjoyed this ride on this train. But I don't know how many of you have noticed this difficult turn. In 1880, the engineer who was laying the track, could not find enough space for the track to climb up. It was impossible to take the track forward along the hills. He was stuck. His wife gave him an idea. *Their Conversation:* Engineer's wife: Darling, why are you so worried with this piece of paper? Engineer: I am not able to find a solution for this Engineering problem. Wife: What problem? tell me. Engineer: After constructing upto this stretch, not able to proceed forward. Wife: So what? Engineer: No place to go forward, very steep terrain. Wife: If you are not able to proceed forward, don't worry. Go backward. _Engineer: what?_ _Wife: Yes,, Go reverse!_ Engineer got the solution and finalised the design. He had mentioned this in his diary. *Such an Engineering Marvel*
