EFIS Centre is leading the EU-funded SUBMERSE project that is prototyping and deploying innovative technologies into existing submarine cables to monitor the Earth and its systems. The project has key areas of potential impacts, including scientific advancements, innovation through standardisation of technical infrastructure and addressing key societal and environmental challenges. On 4th-5th September, our team members Matías Barberis Rami & Carmela - カルメラ Asero - アセロ led the first workshop on impact, sustainability and exploitation of the project and the infrastructure. This workshop was held as during a project workshop in Potsdam 🇩🇪 hosted by Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre GFZ Follow the SUBMERSE project page to stay updated with recent developments. In the upcoming months we will publish the first report, including the workshop results that are of high interest for research communities as well as Research and Technology Infrastructures worldwide. #researchinfrastructures #impact #sustainability #submerse #technology #research #innovation

🏆 We did it! My PhD supervisor Clemens Thielen and me won the EURO Prize for the Common Good 2024 👨🔬 This would never have been possible without the support of our wonderful team, Inka Kaufmann Alves and Mirjam Lawens-Rotter from Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences, Stefanie Seiffert from igr GmbH, Michael Marques Alves from VG Enkenbach-Alsenborn, and Lars Stuckert from KMB. A big thank you for your support and cooperation during and after the project! 🚀 Congratulations also to the other nominees who had great projects. Ohad Eisenhändler and his colleagues showcased how Israel could transform its energy-mix towards renewables until 2050 and Ashraf Labib and his colleagues were part of an impressive project investigating search and rescue strategies in the arctic sea. I can only encourage everyone to also check out their work. ⚖ Also thanks to the jury consisting of Cathal Brugha, Claudia D'Ambrosio, Alec Morton, Eeva Vilkkumaa, and Ulrike Reisach and to EURO - The Association of European Operational Research Societies for offering the prize. Your engagement inspires all members from the OR-community to think how their science can make the world a better place. 🏛 I could probably tag half my LinkedIn-contacts in this post, which I will not, but I definitely have to thank my research group at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz (and I will not tag them all) since working with them is just awesome. Period. 🔜 What's next? Tbh, idk. I'm coming home from the conference with a bunch of new ideas and I will have to get them sorted in the next days. In any case, I spent my last months on evaluating how open-source APIs can be integrated into my software. First APIs are already connected and I'm hoping to release the next generation of rocket science municipal flood mitigation soon. Considering this year's floods, we all need it desperately. 🚅 By the way, I realized that taking the night train is a great way to travel to conferences. If you want to save about 1t of CO2 equivalents, or just want to avoid not getting onto your flight because it was overbooked, you're very much invited to take the railway next time.

The Municipality of Alba Iulia is paving the way towards a smarter, more efficient future with the #DOITSMARTER project! 🚀 In two remarkable events, the municipality showcased how automation and predictive algorithms are revolutionizing thermal energy consumption. 💡 Our focus? Boosting energy efficiency in buildings while tackling the growing challenge of energy poverty head-on. 📅 First up was the National Symposium "CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE ACTIVITY OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFER," hosted by the 1 Decembrie 1918 University in Alba Iulia. The turnout was impressive, with over 30 representatives from key stakeholders including the Ministry of Innovation and Research, the National Agency for Energy Regulation, universities, energy producers, distributors, and private companies. 🌐 Stay tuned for upcoming scientific contributions that we'll be sharing soon.
