🚀 Few days ago on February 22nd, a landmark move for #digitalgovernance and #accountability was set into motion. The Delegated Act on independent #audits under the Digital Services Act (#DSA) officially entered into force, marking a significant step forward in regulating the digital space: https://lnkd.in/d-CPbfDX. 💻 This act mandates annual audits for Very Large Online Platforms (#VLOPs) and Search Engines (#VLOSEs) to ensure their #compliance with the DSA's obligations. These audits, to be conducted by independent auditors, are not just about regulatory compliance but also about adherence to commitments made through #codesofconduct and crisis protocols. 🌍 The European Commission's press release sheds light on the structured approach provided by the Delegated Act. It offers a comprehensive framework that guides VLOPs, VLOSEs, and auditing organizations through the audit process, ensuring transparency, reliability, and accountability in digital services. This development is a crucial step in ensuring that digital platforms operate not only with #innovation and efficiency but also with #integrity and responsibility towards users' rights and #safety online. #DigitalServicesAct #TechnologyGovernance #DigitalAccountability #OnlineSafety

In today's digital world, the spread of information is at a lightning speed, the importance of fact-checking has never been greater! We must remain vigilant in verifying information we encounter daily. Check out our fact-checking process by our head of training Edgar Mathew karuhanga. "When we are fact checking information, we are intentional about finding the original source of the claim made. It’s pertinent that you find the primary source of the false information and not from a secondary source. After finding the original source, you then define the terms and concepts in the claim. You then inspect the evidence that has been used to support the claim for example, check the images and videos that have been used to make the claim. After this, you then go on to conduct your research. In here, you can investigate the claim using the latest reliable data or consult an expert in that field to confirm or deny the claim made. After all this, you then publish your fact check but with a clear verdict according to the analysis you have made. The claim may be inaccurate, misleading, exaggerated, used out of context among other verdicts. It's important that your reader gets to the same conclusion when they follow your fact checking process if they fact check the same claim like you." European Parliament Think Tank (EPTT)--Briefing Online information manipulation and information integrity: An overview of key challenges, actors and the EU's evolving response [30 September 2024] https://lnkd.in/gcA4-7Xj or https://lnkd.in/g3h8qJi6 The global information ecosystem is facing challenges on various levels, necessitating a clear overview of the key issues at stake, the actors involved and possible European Union responses. On a geostrategic level, authoritarian state- and non-state actors, who work to game the open democratic information ecosystems in their favour, have gained the most visibility. At the same time, the tech companies that underpin those open information ecosystems – and that help provide the infrastructure used for information manipulation – are under pressure to take more responsibility. Evolving technologies can exacerbate the risks of information ecosystems working against democracy, rather than for it. Moreover, underlying societal, educational and economic vulnerabilities hamper both individual and collective resilience against information manipulation. The impact on health, societies, economies, democracy, international decision-making, security and human rights has become increasingly visible in recent years. Correspondingly, there is a growing sense of urgency to ensure information integrity, both in the context of elections and beyond. The EU has continued to strengthen its efforts to counter information manipulation and interference, including online disinformation, since 2015. The evolving measures have matured into a growing regulatory framework to address digital information infrastructure vulnerabilities and boost information ecosystems. This, in addition to strengthening societal resilience, involves a high level of cooperation and coordination within and beyond the EU, across all policy areas and with all levels of society. International and multilateral cooperation is therefore key to future-proofing the response.

On 4 July, the German Bundestag elected the members of the Digital Services Coordinator (DSC) Advisory Board. This step was taken following the entry into force of the German Digital Services Act (DDG) as the national transposition of the European Digital Services Act (DSA). Alexander Rabe, Managing Director of the eco Association, was elected to the Advisory Board with a cross-party majority as one of four representatives from industry associations. “The Digital Services Act will shape the framework conditions for the provision of digital services throughout the Internet industry. Standardised rules for the digital Single Market, as well as fair and reasonable liability rules, are therefore of essential importance to our member companies.
