Island nations including the Philippines may scale 'Island-carrying capacity framework' for tourism incorporating food supply, quality of life index among other development measures given rice, fish, other local produce production issues and rising undernourished proportion in rural and urban areas. Higher foreign-to-local currency equivalent to be used for local food prices deemed as cheap may likely affect local standard food prices, and rerouting of supply towards foreign cohort with higher buying capacity resulting to unaffordability for the low-income rural households. AGRITOURISM path including investment to rural farms and local farm cooperatives may be more sustainable for the Philippines given food production blocks and rising total undernourished proportion.
“We have to better direct the funding we have to where it is needed most, in particular rural areas of low-income countries where hunger is most prevalent,” said IFAD President Alvaro Lario at the annual High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York. 🌱Every dollar spent on resilience now saves up to $10 in emergency aid in the future. Investing in rural development is key to ending hunger and building a sustainable future. ➡ Find out more: https://bit.ly/3xYupJ6 #SOFI2024 #HLPF2024

In #Colombia, the govt has struggled to increase secure #LandTenure in rural areas. A whole range of strategies are underway, testing new ways to cover the costs, both money and time, to formalize rural land. One of these strategies includes recruiting the private sector to put their money where their #CSR is. USAID Land for Prosperity has had some wins by working with the private sector. 🔴The International Rescue Committee's latest article in the VOICE Out Loud discusses the critical role of #AnticipatoryAction in fragile settings. This piece examines how proactive measures, such as anticipatory cash transfers, can significantly enhance the #resilience of vulnerable communities facing climate shocks and other crises. The article highlights the success of anticipatory cash transfers in Nigeria, demonstrating how early financial support can help households reduce negative coping strategies, protect livelihoods, and make productive investments. By acting before #disasters strike, these interventions can mitigate the severe impacts of climate shocks on already vulnerable populations. The International Rescue Committee identifies the need for increased funding and research to expand anticipatory action in fragile settings. Despite the proven benefits, only a small fraction of #humanitarian funding is currently allocated to these proactive measures. The article advocates for a paradigm shift towards anticipatory action, calling for stronger political commitment, better early warning systems, and innovative financial strategies to support these efforts. 🔽Learn how anticipatory action can transform humanitarian responses in fragile settings and protect the most vulnerable communities. 🔽

Let's talk about improving the participation of local actors in water and sanitation—this can boost accountability and empower communities. However, in many countries, there's a gap: while responsibilities are being shifted locally, the operational and financial management haven't kept up. To tackle this challenge, the SWA Civil Society Constituency partnered with the International Budget Partnership to host an informative knowledge exchange. The goal was to brainstorm ways to strengthen local governments' ability to handle funds effectively, increase opportunities for community involvement, and improve transparency. We also explored how civil society can play a key role in this process. For example, fiscal decentralization can sometimes blur lines of responsibility, making it hard to track how money is used and whether it's delivering results. To find best practices, we studied cases from Pakistan, Nigeria, Togo, Kenya, Mozambique, and Indonesia, along with insights from WaterAid's urban sanitation program. Stay tuned as we work together towards more effective and transparent governance!

The positive peace approach emphasizes addressing root causes of conflict and promoting factors that contribute to peace. In Turkana County, Kenya, this approach can be applied by: 1. **Community Engagement:** Involving local communities in decision-making processes and development initiatives fosters a sense of ownership and reduces potential sources of conflict. 2. **Education and Awareness:** Promoting education on conflict resolution, human rights, and sustainable development can empower individuals and communities to address issues peacefully. 3. **Economic Development:** Supporting sustainable economic activities, such as agriculture and small businesses, can contribute to poverty reduction and enhance stability in the region. 4. **Resource Management:** Addressing issues related to resource scarcity, particularly water and pastureland, through equitable and sustainable management practices can mitigate conflicts over natural resources. 5. **Infrastructure Development:** Investing in infrastructure, including roads and basic amenities, can improve connectivity and access to services, promoting economic growth and social cohesion. 6. **Social Inclusion:** Ensuring representation and participation of diverse ethnic and social groups in decision-making processes helps build an inclusive society and reduces tensions. 7. **Conflict Resolution Mechanisms:** Strengthening local conflict resolution mechanisms and promoting alternative dispute resolution methods can help address conflicts before they escalate. 8. **Healthcare and Social Services:** Improving healthcare services and social support systems can contribute to community well-being, reducing vulnerabilities that might lead to conflict. 9. **Political Stability:** Promoting transparent and inclusive governance practices can enhance political stability and reduce the likelihood of violent conflicts. 10. **International Cooperation:** Collaboration with international organizations and neighboring regions can provide additional resources, expertise, and support for sustainable development and peace-building efforts. It's crucial to tailor these strategies to the specific context and needs of Turkana County, involving local communities throughout the process to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the positive peace approach.
