From the statistics from #Uganda’s National Assessment of Progress in Education (#NAPE) survey report conducted in 2023 in 1,770 primary schools across the country and released on Tuesday, 13th August 2024 by Uganda National Examinations Board, it is evident that; 📖 Proficiency in numeracy and literacy in English is gradually improving but some districts, especially rural areas still have very low proficiency levels. 🏫 Just 9% of Primary Three learners in rural areas are proficient in numeracy which is lower than the national average. 🍀 58% of Primary Six learners are proficient in numeracy (an improvement from 55% in 2018), while 42.7% are proficient in literacy in English. ✅ Over half (53.9% - 50.6% boys, 57.4% girls) of P3 learners in Uganda are now proficient in Literacy in English, up from 49.9% in 2018. 💧 About 3 in 5 (57.5% - 57.5% boys, 57.5% girls) P3 learners in Uganda are proficient in Mathematics, compared to 55.2% in 2018. 🔥 Barriers to quality education like lack of learning materials, poor feeding, and limited parental involvement in a child's education are major factors contributing to poor performance in rural schools. This report expresses the need for joint efforts from both public and private sector players in addressing the gaps in the education sector, especially in lower primary classes. The New Competence Based Curriculum in Kenya🇰🇪 leaves alot to be desired. it is giving the government, parents, teachers and students tough time. The pioneer learners are being used as guinea pigs and there has been a lot of trial and errors on what and how the VB. content should be taught and examined. The primary school head teachers are happy to have the JSS retained within the primary school level because they have the ability and facilities to deliver the content so long as the government capitation threshold holds.The Diploma or Degree trained teachers are being forced to teach anything and everything despite their area of specialization and worse the government is yet to produce and supply some of subject book or provide guidance on how to teach the subject matter. Parents, teachers and parents are still playing the wait and see. Am much concerned that we might be losing a whole generation of learners. who will save our young learners from this mess🤔 Education stakeholders must collaborate and innovate to overcome challenges and drive meaningful change in the sector,"

“In grade 4, I was only able to read words, but I can now read stories and even help my friends to read.” 🗯️ In 2022, the Hempel Foundation, through a partnership with UNICEF, supported the government of Zambia to expand the Catch-Up program to the Luapula province. This program has been a game-changer for learners like Dyness. Utilizing the innovative 'Teaching at the Right Level' (TaRL) methodology, this initiative focuses on ensuring every child reaches proficiency in literacy and numeracy. 📚 But Dyness' story is just one among many. Across Luapula Province, over 75,000 learners have been reached through Catch-Up, with impressive results. Literacy levels have soared, with 62% of learners reading more than a paragraph by the end of 2023, compared to just 34% at the start of the school year. Numeracy skills have also seen a significant boost, with learners demonstrating improved proficiency in addition and subtraction. 🎉 We see foundational learning as the building block for all other learning. VVOB and the Hempel Foundation are once again joining forces to tackle low learning outcomes in primary education across Uganda and Zambia. ✏️ Since our partnership began in Uganda in 2022, VVOB has successfully introduced the Teaching at the Right Level (#TaRL) approach, significantly boosting foundational #literacy and #numeracy skills among primary school learners. "As we celebrate the two new collaborations in Uganda and Zambia, I wish to highlight the strength of VVOB’s evidence-based foundational learning programmes and the inclusive approach to stakeholder engagement with governments and knowledge institutions," shares Anders Holm, Executive Director of the Hempel Foundation. 💬 In the new phase of our collaboration in Uganda (2024-2027), TaRL will be scaled up in Kasese district, reaching all 266 government-aided primary schools. Meanwhile, our pilot in Zambia, launching in June 2024, will be implemented in 110 schools, directly impacting nearly 25,000 Grade 2 learners and indirectly benefiting 73,000 learners in Grades 3-5. 🙌 This partnership underscores our shared commitment to enhancing #education quality on a broader scale. 🎉 Big news from Tanzania! We're thrilled to share the impact of the Twaweza teacher incentive program, supported by the Hempel Foundation. Over 77,000 students have seen significant improvements in their basic reading and math skills in 2023, thanks to this transformative initiative. This week, teachers in 265 primary schools across 11 regions will receive performance bonuses totaling TZS 401 million, based on the improved reading and numeracy skills of their early grade students at the end of the 2023 school year. That is ca. 3,4% of a teacher's annual salary. KiuFunza, as the program is known, is making waves in education by targeting foundational reading and numeracy skills in grades 1, 2, and 3. These schools were carefully selected from areas with the greatest need, and early results have shown promising improvements in student pass rates compared to control groups. The impact of KiuFunza is profound. Pass rates for reading Kiswahili have increased from 44% to 49% in KiuFunza schools, compared to a control group. Numeracy pass rates have also risen from 45% to 52% in these schools. These numbers highlight the tangible difference KiuFunza is making in students' lives, setting them on a path to success. 🙌 But KiuFunza isn't just about numbers – it's about empowering teachers and students alike. Aidan Eyakuze, Executive Director of Twaweza, emphasizes “Learning is key to our national development: all our children should be able to read and calculate by age 10. Of course, we need good schools, pedagogy and books but people often forget that we also need motivated teachers to achieve this.
