I had the pleasure of moderating the closing keynote at the Reuters Events Sustainable Business #SustainabilityUSA conference in NYC this week — an impactful dialogue between Lauren Riley (United Airlines) and Ivan Frishberg (Amalgamated Bank). We explored how businesses must navigate the changing sustainability landscape, especially with mandatory disclosures on the rise. One key takeaway: “We know that the sustainability landscape is changing, and mandatory disclosures are becoming more prevalent. As part of this, it’s important to ask how we can rethink and retrain CEOs around how organizations can move forward in this new agenda, and how we value companies appropriately around these changes.” The challenge is to accelerate efforts and integrate ethical sustainability practices into broader business strategies, fostering trust, loyalty, and long-term financial success by aligning operations with societal impacts. The trends are positive. We’re making progress, but we’re not making progress fast enough. WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development

Sustainability on the menu, my type of dinner 🍝 What happens when you bring together experts, a shared commitment to sustainability, and a room full of meaningful conversations? On Tuesday, I found out at an inspiring network dinner hosted by our partner ESG Expert, where we explored how to translate CSRD knowledge into impactful action. The event wasn’t just about exchanging ideas—it was a reminder that even in the face of the anti-ESG narrative, sustainability is here to stay. Companies have invested too much, and the benefits are too significant to backtrack now. Here are my key takeaways from the evening: 🔎 Sustainability is here to stay. Despite resistance, businesses recognize the long-term value of ESG and are committed to their ongoing efforts. 🔎 Meaningful stakeholder engagement drives value. It’s not just a CSRD compliance requirement—it helps you: 🔹 Understand your stakeholders better. 🔹 Strengthen relationships. 🔹 Mitigate risks across your supply chain. 🔎 Collaboration turns knowledge into action. Cross-sector partnerships and focused networks are essential for solving ESG challenges and sharing practical solutions. A big thanks to Annechien ten Brink and Katja Marianne Noordam for their interesting insights and presentations on CSRD strategy, impactful stakeholder engagement, and cross-sector collaborations. Evenings like this prove how powerful small-scale, intentional networking can be for driving real ESG progress. #csrd #esgkennisplatform #esg

Last night, Sancroft hosted an excellent panel discussion: "How do you prioritise when every part of the sustainability agenda seems to be at the top of the list?" A room full of experts, big questions, and even bigger insights—particularly around defining and delivering value in sustainability. 💡 Key Takeaways: 🔹 Sustainability isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating and sustaining value. 🔹 Reporting is crucial, but it shouldn’t overshadow delivery—teams need capacity, not just more reports. 🔹 Engagement drives change—getting people interested and linking sustainability to your overall business strategy is key. 🔹 Radical integration across the value chain can unlock unexpected opportunities. 🔹 ESG? Is it really ESE—Environmental, Social, and Economic value. One of the interesting questions from the audience: If we are all focused on making sustainability a value driver - how do you determine 'value' in ESG over the short, medium, and long term? A huge thank you to our panellists Martin Burdekin, Chris Brown, Thea Sherer and moderator Judy Kuszewski and attendees for such an enjoyable evening. Looking forward to our future series of events over 2025!

🌍 Reflections from Climate Week in NYC 🌍 My first #ClimateWeek was an exhilarating experience— equal parts energizing yet exhausting (pro tip: wear comfortable shoes). The number of events and sustainability professionals in town made the week an extremely insightful and valuable time investment. A few reflections looking back at the week: Decarbonization Challenges: Navigating the complexities of decarbonization is proving to be daunting for smaller LPs and middle-market firms. It's crucial that NGOs and advocacy orgs meet firms where they are on their sustainability journeys. Not every firm has a sustainability team and climate expert on staff. Regulatory Landscape: While climate advocates often view the US approach to regulation as lacking, many in the business world feel European regulations have gone too far. Striking a balance and driving global convergence will be essential and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has emerged as the leading standard setter driving this conversation. Ambition and Resilience: Greater ambition is needed to mitigate the more dire impacts that may be caused by climate change. And, while decarbonization remains crucial in combatting climate change, further investment in climate resilience will be critically important as the impacts of climate change are already being felt. APAC Opportunities: While most institutional capital resides in North America and Europe, Asia contains more than half the world’s population and is responsible for half of the world’s emissions footprint. This is a significant and underinvested opportunity. Blended finance can help de-risk investments, but institutional investors are also looking for more established players to develop the track records and pipelines necessary to put dollars to work at scale. Resources: Institutional Limited Partners Association (ILPA)'s Decarbonization Handbook guides LPs in understanding current decarbonization approaches in private markets and the tools available to implement their strategies. It discusses popular frameworks like ESG Data Convergence Initiative, the Private Markets Decarbonization Roadmap, and NZIF. There's a link to this resource at the bottom of the post. It was also great to catch up with so many industry friends and colleagues: Ben Morley Michael Eisenberg Keren R. Maaike van der Schoot Karin Bouwmeester Jimmy Yan Andrew Siwo Ben Thornley Jane Bieneman Natasha Buckley Dan Jacobs Marc Lino Katie Barber Chase Jordan Julia Lamorelle Samantha Hill Megan Starr Allegra Day
