Choosing the right fall protection system can mean the difference between life and death. As safety professionals, we describe safety systems as either “active” or “passive” to identify the type and amount of interaction required by the worker. But what distinguishes active fall protection systems from passive fall protection systems? And how can worker behavior influence their effectiveness? In this post, we discuss how to navigate active and passive fall protection systems in construction: https://lnkd.in/d4zxhUjb #ActiveFallProtection #PassiveFallProtection #WorkZoneAwarenessWeek

In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor, one in five worker deaths occurs in construction. Common types of construction accidents include: falls, getting hit by moving objects, equipment malfunctions, electrocutions, collapsing structures, exposure to hazardous materials, fires and explosions, and overexertion or repetitive stress injuries. When disaster strikes on a construction site, a construction accident lawyer becomes your frontline ally. A fall hazard is anything at your worksite that could cause you to lose your balance and result in a fall. Although any walking or working surface can be a potential fall hazard, most common fall hazards in construction are related to unprotected edges, openings, scaffolds and ladders. Guardrails, safety net systems and personal fall arrest system are three generally acceptable methods of protection for workers who are exposed to fall hazards in construction sites. In general, it is better to use fall prevention systems, such as guardrails, than fall protection systems, such as safety nets or fall arrest devices, because prevention is more proactive and efficient than having to protect.
