fireblocking =/= firestopping. Simple as that. But boy do I just keep seeing and hearing about foams on jobs. FIP 1 Step not withstanding, if you're firestopping with a foam, there is a high likelihood that its not correct. If there are no rated assemblies, it is not a firestop product. Lets discuss why I believe existing firestop needs to be inspected at a minimum annually. This is in a facility that I personally know was firestopped correctly. But over the years, pipes shift and intumescent can seize and contract a little bit. This is a proper depth of seal around a tight annulus, tooled and everything. My guess is that something shoved the sprinkler main over somewhere over the history of the structure and broke the bonds of the product. Will it still flash off in a fire? Absolutely. Will it let smoke and toxic gas pass through the opening until it does so? Absolutely.
