Birmingham’s Tyseley Energy Park to get HGV electric truck charging station SSE Energy Solutions has unveiled plans to build its first all-electric charging centre for heavy commercial vehicles (HGVs) at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham. The hub is just a few minutes from the A45 and will be able to charge up to four electric trucks at the same time using 360 kW chargers. Each charger is designed to provide a range of up to 300 km in up to two hours, depending on the type and size of the vehicle and battery, the company said. It is part of SSE’s wider plans to build 500 ultra-fast charging stations for electric cars and commercial fleets powered by renewable energy across the UK and Ireland by 2030. It is estimated that diesel-powered trucks are responsible for 17% of all road emissions in the UK, despite only making up five percent of all vehicles on British roads. Promising developments on the Renewables landscape from JLR. They’ve been collaborating with Allye and have recently unveiled BESS, a Battery Energy Storage System, a portable system comparable in size and weight to a typical diesel generator.   Capable of storing 270kWh of energy, BESS offers a significant power reserve, akin to nearly a month's worth of energy for the average UK home. There are always exciting developments in the EV world, and this week is not an exception. Octopus Energy just launched the Octopus Power Pack, the UK’s first V2G tariff. V2G stands for vehicle-to-grid, a technology that enables EV drivers to store excess renewable energy in the car battery and export it back to the grid when demand is high. This way, they can help balance the grid, reduce carbon emissions, and save money on their energy bills. According to Octopus Energy, the average EV driver can save more than £850 a year on charging costs by using the V2G tariff, compared to a standard variable tariff. The V2G tariff is currently a beta version and requires a compatible charger, a compatible EV car, a smart meter, and permission to export energy to the local network. Caltrans announced a $127 million agreement for six more zero-emission, hydrogen-powered passenger train sets, building upon a previous order to deliver the first four hydrogen-powered intercity train sets. The agreement was signed with Stadler Rail, Inc. The trains will help strengthen the state’s zero-emission passenger rail capabilities. The first trains are expected to enter service in 2027. The train set design will make them more efficient, lighter weight and more affordable than traditional locomotive-hauled coaches. The purchase is funded through California Governor Gavin Newsom’s $10 billion, multiyear zero-emission vehicle package, which included $407 million for the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) to purchase or lease state-of-the-art clean bus and rail equipment and infrastructure. The vehicles will be based on Stadler’s successful Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train (FLIRT) concept, extending work done with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority to develop self-powered multiple-unit trains using zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells without the need of a separate locomotive. Caltrans’ purchase of the first four trainsets in October occurred one day before the U.S. Department of Energy announced California will receive up to $1.2 billion as one of the country’s hydrogen hubs to accelerate the development and deployment of clean renewable hydrogen.
