Men More Likely To Suffer From #Diabetes Related Diseases Than Women A recent study revealed that men with diabetes (type 1 and 2) are far more likely to suffer from co-morbidities like cardiovascular disease (CVD), kidney complications, and foot or leg complications than women with diabetes. “Although the prevalence of diabetes is similar in men and women (worldwide prevalence of 8.9% and 8.4%, respectively), the incidence and progression of diabetes-related complications appear to be more sex-specific,” the authors wrote in their study that was published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. https://lnkd.in/gE8WFkRc #DiabetesManagement #ContinuousGlucoseMonitoring #CGMTechnology #BloodGlucoseControl #InsulinDosage #GlucoseAlerts #HealthTech #MedicalDevices

There is a lot of buzz about an intermittent fasting paper (although no one has seen the underlying study yet) which was presented at the American Heart Association Epidemiology and Prevention|Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions 2024, Abstract P192. This paper cites a study: -A study of over 20,000 adults found that those who followed an 8-hour time-restricted eating schedule, a type of intermittent fasting, had a 91% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease. -People with heart disease or cancer also had an increased risk of cardiovascular death. -Compared with a standard schedule of eating across 12-16 hours per day, limiting food intake to less than 8 hours per day was not associated with living longer. This study literally FLIES in the FACE of many many other studies which indicate that time restricted feeding is extremely beneficial to overall health and longevity. It is suspicious that the underlying study was NOT published along with the write up and results. The authors have published a graphic from the study and I will post that in the comments. Some interesting things from the graphic... -the <8 group had a HIGHER BMI than other groups (odd)... -the <8 group had the HIGHEST number of tobacco users... https://lnkd.in/gfpYisBE

Background: Few studies have investigated catatonia or adequately elucidated its epidemiology or pathophysiology. Catatonia is a debilitating neuropsychiatric syndrome. Case presentation: In this case report, we present a 15-year-old boy who was brought to the emergency room with weakness, gait disturbance, and urinary incontinence. Conclusion: The findings of this investigation indicate that in cases where medicinal intervention has proven ineffective, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) seems to be a commendable substitute form of treatment. #Catatonia, #UrinaryIncontinence, #Adolescent

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) recently published expert advice to provide practical, best-practice guidance for clinicians on the occurrence, diagnosis, treatment and management of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). As the AGA notes, EPI is frequently under-diagnosed and, as a result, patients are often not treated appropriately. There is an urgent need to increase awareness of and treatment for this condition because if left untreated it can seriously impact a patient’s quality of life. Read the AGA Clinical Practice Update on the Epidemiology, Evaluation, and Management of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency at: https://lnkd.in/gxmKXZyp VIVUS is committed to building awareness of EPI and providing treatment options to help patients manage this lifelong condition. Ophthopedia Update:BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia: Epidemiology and impact: The global all-ages prevalence of epidemiologically-measured ‘functional’ presbyopia was estimated at 24.9% in 2015, affecting 1.8 billion people. This prevalence was projected to stabilise at 24.1% in 2030 due to increasing myopia, but to affect more people (2.1 billion) due to population dynamics. Factors affecting the prevalence of presbyopia include age, geographic location, urban versus rural location, sex, and, to a lesser extent, socioeconomic status, literacy and education, health literacy and inequality. #eye #Ophthalmology #CLAE
