It is pertinent to assess the current pediatric surgical practices and conditions to better visualize the needs of pediatric surgical departments all around the country. The demand for pediatric surgery is on the rise in Pakistan. Not only is there a need for more surgeons, but more specialized and relevant equipment is also required to allow for the practice of newer surgical techniques. Exciting news from the surgical realm! Recently, an incredible laparoscopic denture extraction surgery was performed by Dr. Gajendra Bhatti, MS, MCh Surgical Gastroenterology and HPB Surgery (JIPMER, Pondicherry). The patient, aged 50, accidentally swallowed an artificial denture, and despite two unsuccessful attempts via UGIE, it remained lodged at the Gastroesophageal junction. Through meticulous laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Bhatti successfully removed the impacted denture, employing a gastrostomy near the GEJ with V-lock sutures 3-0, and extracting the denture in a specimen bag. This case underscores the importance of surgical expertise and innovation in challenging scenarios. Dr. Dan Witmer, one of our leading hip replacement specialists, recently presented impactful research (alongside Rob Magaldi and Sara Strecker) at the Northeast Arthroplasty Conference, winning 1st place for their poster presentation! Their study focused on the effects of GLP-1 agonists medications on patients undergoing total hip replacement. The key takeaway? These medications can increase the risk of PONV after surgery. Based on this research, our new protocols at BJI and our surgery center recommend stopping these medications one week before surgery to minimize PONV in patients. This research is ongoing and the groups will be re-studied later this year to learn the outcome. #arthroplasty #research #patientcare #OAHCT #MakeYourMove
