There is no doubt that our global mobility needs to become safer. As recent statistics show, one important scenario for reducing accidents is to prevent collisions between cyclists, pedestrians and moving vehicles at intersections. Let's take Germany as an example: 🚴♀️ In 2019, there were 129,000 road accidents involving motorized vehicles and cyclists, resulting in 1050 fatalities - with more than 34 percent of the fatalities being cyclists. 🛣️ More than 60 % of cyclist deaths occurred on the road. ❗The most dangerous are intersections, where almost 1/5 of the accidents happen, resulting in higher death rates than on the road. In his presentation at Intertraffic, our colleague Dominic Berges highlighted how to address this challenge. His key takeaways: 🤝 We need global, cross-industry collaboration to make our roads safer. 🧠 With the help of #AI, road users can be better detected and safety can be increased. A concrete example is our Yutraffic awareAI solution, which anonymously analyzes the movements of all road users, providing valuable insights into traffic patterns and behavior, and is able to send warnings to vehicles (#V2X). 💰 Cost savings can be achieved by utilizing a single detection platform at the intersection - addressing also standard #ITS applications 🔜 Today, we are already able to predict collisions and issue warnings; tomorrow, machine learning algorithms could even predict potentially dangerous situations. What will be needed to achieve #VisionZero in the future are regulatory frameworks and governance, as well as realistic expectations about the capabilities and limitations of technological solutions.
