It's important to consider the environmental impact of our choices, especially when it comes to something as simple as moving. Many of us resort to using cardboard boxes for this task, not realizing the environmental impact it has on our planet. The FlipFlopi Project's pilot project: "Mitigating Plastic Pollution through Heritage Boat Building" has resulted in the establishment of a first-of-its-kind plastic waste Material Recovery Facility and a Heritage Boat building training centre in Lamu, Kenya. Indigenous knowledge and modern innovation are combined, in the construction of the traditional sailing and motorised vessels. Flipflopi’s latest vessel prototype is a taxi boat (fabricated entirely from recycled plastic) and powered by a solar-electric. Over a month-long trial ferrying islanders on the solar-powered water taxi, the new eco-friendly system was found to match the speed of traditional petrol engines, while being substantially cheaper to run, and with zero emissions. The project is part of a wider set of objectives to determine the potential for holistic step-changes in addressing the environmental impact of working boats used in maritime and low-income communities like Lamu. I've seldom worked on such a diverse range of initiatives, as those on the go under The SMEP Programme. From designing innovative business models, microfinance and policy and regulatory levers for the lead acid battery industry in Bangladesh, to entrepreneurial hubs in Nepal converting plastics wastes to building materials. From piloting organic waste to biochar and BSF in Kenya to water treatment technologies in several sectors including the water-heavy textiles sector. From Catchgreen's biodegradable ropes that have applications for the fishing and aquaculture industries to this water taxi fabricated from 1.2 tonnes of HDPE plastic that was recovered by a community-centred programme, and would otherwise have been burnt, dumped or destined for the ocean. What makes this pilot-focussed programme so powerful, is the range of collaborations fostered, such as the collaboration under the leadership of ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna: 21 regional legislators from 7 East Africa Community member states convened to unanimously back the draft Single Use Plastics Bill which advocates for harmonised regional legislation and aims to ban the manufacturing, production, and distribution of certain unnecessary single-use plastics, such as balloons, cutlery, cosmetic micro-beads, and more. The Programme technical partners at UNCTAD are currently participating in the Global Negotiations on Plastics, involving SMEP grantees in different side events, with the opportunity to share learnings, gain further collaborations and provide practical insights into UNCTAD’s position points at the table. (The programme has been established by FCDO is funded by UKID, and is implemented by SouthSouthNorth and Pegasys Consulting International in a consortium.)

Do you know how much e-waste the world generated in 2019? Equal to 350 cruise ships, and only 17.4% of that was recycled! Now it's 2024, and the numbers are even higher. As we become more dependent on technology, this problem continues to grow. #ewaste #recycling #sustainability

As revealed earlier this month, Gander & White Shipping understands the carbon impact of shipping and is taking bold steps towards a sustainable future. In a case study for the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), Alexander Bradford, Gander & White’s Global Business Development & Sustainability Manager, shares more details on our progress, with meticulous data collection allowing us to identify key areas for improvement and set ambitious goals to drive meaningful change. Initiatives so far include solar-powered vehicles, a dedicated Green Team, and a groundbreaking partnership with ROKBOX for reusable crates, reducing waste by up to 90%. Over 75% of our packing materials are now biodegradable, which is a significant stride towards a greener future. However, challenges remain - such as promoting ocean freight and optimising HGV efficiency - but we are committed to overcoming them. Read the case study in full here: https://lnkd.in/eiYsE-vJ and get in touch with any questions or comments you may have. #Sustainability #GreenShipping #EnvironmentalImpact #GanderAndWhite #BusinessSustainability #ArtLogistics #GCC #Rokbox
