🔨 Shaping an Inclusive Future in Construction 🌍 As the construction sector works towards a more sustainable future, it’s imperative that we also tackle the ongoing gender imbalance ⚖️ that exists within the industry. 🌟 Currently, women represent roughly 15% of the 2.7 million strong workforce in construction—a clear indication that we must take decisive action! Gemma Webb the head of Diversity & Inclusion at Barratt Development PLC, highlights the obstacles we face in attracting more women to this vibrant field. A recent survey of 2,000 women 🧐 indicates that, despite some advancements, almost half still view construction as a male-dominated environment. Misunderstandings surrounding job flexibility and a lack of female role models continue to impede our progress. 🌟 There is, however, a hopeful outlook! Almost 50% of younger women (ages 18-24) are eager to explore careers in construction, drawn in by competitive wages and superb training programs. 🌟Having personally experienced the construction industry, I can vouch for the rewarding opportunities it provides—whether it’s honing skills, fostering collaboration, or gaining invaluable project management and resilience experience. 🌟Gemma also discusses how Barratt Homes has initiated key programs like Our Catalyst initiative and SheBuilds to help close the gender gap. These initiatives are specifically tailored to assist women in finding mentorship and progressing into leadership positions. It’s encouraging to see that nearly half of the Catalyst participants have moved to higher roles, with some even reaching director-level positions! 🌟The future of construction is tied to our dedication to diversity and inclusion. By encouraging more women to join the field, we not only address the skills shortage but also enrich the industry with diverse perspectives critical for tackling challenges such as climate change. Let’s keep pushing for change and creating opportunities for women in construction. Together, we can innovate and diversify our industry for the better! #DiversityInConstruction #WomenInConstruction #Sustainability #InclusiveWorkplace #BarrattDevelopment #SheBuilds #Catalyst #GenderEquality #womenempowerment https://lnkd.in/dfJh3d5K

Navigating any male-dominated industry, like construction, can be difficult. The World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Gender Gap Report highlights just how significant the problem remains, estimating that it could take as long as 134 years to close the gender gap globally at the current rate of progress. Within construction, these disparities are especially prominent. Women, along with other underrepresented groups, continue to face barriers that prevent them from rising to senior leadership roles.
