Everyday givers are often crucial to the success of philanthropic organizations. And as Andrew Dunckelman (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) highlights in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, grantmakers can influence everyday giving in powerful ways. What can grantmakers do to build generosity at scale? Dunckelman proposes five key actions, including doing more to support the research, data collection, and analysis efforts from ideas42 and other organizations that promote giving.

In an open letter to MacKenzie Scott, Inside Philanthropy writer Dawn Wolfe encourages support of Fund the People and our sister org, All Due Respect (headed by the amazing Alicia Jay). As Dawn writes, Fund the People works “to convince funders that the ‘overhead myth’ really is just that.” But we think funders, in their heart of hearts, already know that. What they don’t know is: what’s the alternative? What do I do differently? What is a better - but hyper-realistic - way of structuring funding to fuel nonprofit efficiency, effectiveness, and impact? So in addition to critiquing the past and present, we have sought to reframe the problem and offer a very common sense solution. Instead of pointing fingers about who caused or maintains the harmful old myths (hint: it’s all of us), we propose a new way of managing reality (hint: we can all be part of it). It’s a framework — a mental model and practical model — that we’ve developed and continue to hone, and that we’ve presented on our podcast, in workshops, and at conferences. I found it really interesting to dive into the insights from the latest survey by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) involving 200 seasoned professional advisers! 📊 The revelations are eye-opening, shedding light on the current landscape of advising HNWIs on philanthropy. What caught my attention? The startling fact that "nearly three-quarters of respondents did not include philanthropy as part of their initial fact-finding with clients." Here's the kicker: 21% of these advisers acknowledged a direct correlation between offering philanthropic advice and winning new business! That's not just a coincidence; it's a golden opportunity to not only enhance your standing as an adviser but also contribute to causes that desperately need financial backing.
