We're proud to join with leading philanthropic funders to support a call for action, advocating for stronger commitment to climate resilience and adaptation funding. The costs of adaptation in developing countries is around $215 billion per year. Yet current finance flows cover only 10% of these costs, creating a large finance gap. Philanthropy can act as a critical catalyst to help unlock greater public and private sector funding and investment, champion climate innovation at local and government levels, and drive systems change at the scale needed to support a climate-resilient world. We can’t get over the fact that only 2% of global philanthropy goes to climate causes. And for carbon removal? Just 2% of that. It’s a huge missed opportunity for all those hoping to tackle the climate crisis. As we gear up for Climate Week NYC, it’s a good time to talk about how philanthropy isn’t just a nice-to-have in the climate fight—it’s critical. The global philanthropic market is approaching $1 trillion. Imagine what we could do if more of that went into carbon removal. https://lnkd.in/g_8dTWza

We are pleased to share the Clean Economy Fund’s latest analysis, Climate Philanthropy 2024, examining the role of philanthropic investments in addressing climate change. According to the report, climate philanthropy in Canada totaled $106 million in 2022, representing only 0.9% of total Canadian philanthropic giving—significantly below the global average of 1.6%. These findings emphasize the need for collaboration and strategic partnerships within the philanthropic sector. As we confront the pressing issue of climate change, this analysis serves as a crucial resource for organizations committed to driving impactful change. We encourage you to explore the analysis in detail: https://lnkd.in/e29EYqmR

ICYMI: Effective climate philanthropy is easier with Giving Green and Charity Navigator. Thanks to Nonprofit Quarterly for stimulating this optimistic conversation with Michael Thatcher and Giving Green founder Daniel Stein.
You've heard about the sharp drop in prices for solar panels and batteries. Ever wonder what's next? At Giving Green, we believe strategic donors and smart climate giving can make the next big thing happen. Our recommended nonprofits "are thinking about what are the breakthroughs that need to happen and what does government have to do to make the breakthrough happen? What does private sector have to do? And then what is the role of nonprofits? Maybe it’s advocating differently, maybe it’s coordinating the private sector, but it’s these system-level changes that will allow these new markets to come into place." Giving Green founder Daniel Stein and Charity Navigator CEO Michael Thatcher recently spoke to Nonprofit Quarterly about some reasons for hope in the climate fight: https://lnkd.in/e_Zi-xjF

Good article on the role of philanthropy in addressing the climate emergency by Surabi Menon and Saliem Fakir. As we navigate the transition to a sustainable future, it's key to take a strategic and holistic approach to our philanthropic choices. Philanthropy can also take on the risks that other funding sources can't, unlocking transformative change. #climatechange #climateworks #climateresearch Check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/eDQA-VyH

“Among the $811 billion of global philanthropic giving in 2022, less than 2% was directed towards climate mitigation action.” - World Economic Forum This caught me by surprise. It will take trillions of dollars to reach our 2050 goals for climate, but with ever-present immediate crises, it can be hard for a longer-term crisis, like climate change, to gain our attention. I appreciated Naomi Klein’s take on this in January’s Fire Drill Fridays session with Jane Fonda–we have a series of intersectional battles that will require intersectional leadership to navigate this “slower kind of violence”, not asking “people to choose between caring about war, caring about racism, caring about public health, and caring about climate”. Some organizations have set their sites on this growing need for climate philanthropy, including ClimateWorks Foundation and One Earth, with their own unique approaches. ClimateWorks’ approach as a philanthropy platform partnering with other organizations has granted more than $1.8 billion USD since 2008. Through an online marketplace approach, One Earth has sourced funding of over $2.7 million USD to support community and grassroot efforts across the globe since its debut in 2020. Both organizations are finding ways to raise awareness and funding and make a dent in the 2% number. If you know of other unique organizations, add them below! 2% is still an absurd figure to me. Still just as shocking now as it was the first time I heard it. Great articulation of the challenge and potential solutions. There are many areas which are just as deserving, certainly, such as education and health, but even so. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason is due to the perspectives shown - philanthropy can provide better education, it can provide cures to deadly diseases, and it can avoid catastrophic climate change? There has to be a better and more positive framing. Each sector - government, philanthropy, and industry - has a large role to play in the climate and more specifically greenhouse gas removal space.
