Congratulations to Business Insider’s video team for winning an Edward R. Murrow Award by Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for their powerful documentary on modern slavery, which garnered 9.5 million views. The investigation uncovered the daily lives of millions in Pakistan and across Southeast Asia who are trapped in the dangerous work of brick-making to repay loans borrowed from kiln owners. Congratulations to Olivia Nemec, Havovi Cooper, Robin Lindsay, and Erica Berenstein for their impactful journalism, which has changed lives. Read more about the doc here: https://bit.ly/3AsFsLE

One thing I pride myself in is covering breaking news. Here is the breakdown of my process journalism for an officer-involved shooting I covered. You do a 6 pm live shot off the top of the show on a different story. Then your producer tells you in your ear, after you go live, go to breaking news of an officer-involved shooting. You get to the scene, and your producer takes you live at 6:17. Then you interview an eyewitness you saw the shooting happen. Your producer takes you live again at 6:48. You're waiting to be briefed by police, so you start logging the eyewitness sound. The police press briefing starts sometime after 7 pm. You gather that, write a PKG for 9/10. You send it back ready to go live off the top at 9 pm. When covering breaking news, I want to inform people on what's going on and how it impacts them. Also, I have a team winning mentality.

I was recently listening to Ezra Klein on a pod lamenting he was never able to chip into Pitchfork - a title he saw as genuinely valueable to his life - before its part-collapse. I've always been sceptical of the pay-if/what-you-want model. It's commercially volatile. It's an appeal to benevolence rather than a signal that journalism has monetary value. And there aren't enough Ezra Kleins in the world. The Daily Aus is now passing the hat around - to a mostly young audience that consumes its content mostly on free social platforms. Bloody good luck, right? Just one in five Australians pay anything for online news, according to the latest University of Canberra News and Research Centre data. But. That number is more like one in four in the under 35 cohort, probably because they're more comfortable with digital payments. And maybe the heart-over-head approach - which donations v subscriptions feels like - actually bonds the audience better. Maybe there's a greater sense of buy-in. Maybe a paywall feels more exclusionary. The Guardian, of course, has enjoyed multiple years of voluntary reader revenue growth. It's now more than half of the Guardian Australia take. So I'm saying maybe I was wrong. Or at least there’s no one-size-fits-all model. But I'm still nagged by the market signal when the vast majority of people see no reason to spend a dime …
