Published recently in the last edition of the Wine and Viticulture Journal. Kathy Evans and Andrew Pirie. (2024) Botrytis risk: new access to weather rules. Wine & Viticulture Journal 39 (3), 64-67. In Brief: Weather and non-weather variables associated with the severity of botrytis bunch rot (BBR) near harvest were identified for Riesling in two climatically different regions of Tasmania. Variables associated strongly with BBR severity were: the mean daily Bacchus index (BI) from flowering to pre-bunch closure; the median daily vapour pressure deficit of air (VPDair) or relative humidity at 15:00 from véraison, an index incorporating BI and VPDair, and the hang time, i.e., the number of days from véraison, > 40 days. Potential applications include diagnosis and adaption of disease management, wine style decisions, or decisions about varietal selections at new sites. This article is a translation of Evans and Pirie (2024). https://lnkd.in/g_yUT8hN

The future belongs to those open to possibilities. Though GMOs stir fears in some, we must not close our minds. There are always risks with any new technology, but also great potential rewards if developed carefully. We owe it to the generations after us to explore GMOs thoughtfully, weighing benefits and risks through reason instead of recoiling reflexively. If they can enrich nutrition, resist disease, better withstand droughts - should we not at least consider their potential? Progress depends on asking what could be, not just accepting what is. Our ancestors improved crops through selective breeding long before GMOs. Perhaps in time we will view this technology as simply the next phase in that age-old quest to partner with nature, feeding more people more sustainably. But we will only realize such a future by facing our fears, questioning assumptions, and letting evidence guide us towards the common good. The path forward calls not for snap reactions but open and discerning minds. We must believe progress comes to the thoughtful, not just the stubborn, and have faith in human ingenuity guided by moral wisdom. If we can manage that, if we can bring light through open debate, then the promise of any technology rests not in what we fear, but in what we might discover.

Daag Ache Hai – The Truth About Pistachio Shell Stains Let’s talk about something most of us don’t think twice about: pistachio shells. Have you ever noticed the light or dark stains on them? What if I told you that the light and dark stains you see on pistachio shells are not a sign of lower quality but a mark of authenticity? 🌿 What causes the stains? These stains are formed naturally during the harvest when the pistachio shell is attached to the hull. But here’s the thing—while we’re supposed to just crack open the shell and enjoy the pistachio inside, the market has made us believe that the shell needs to be perfectly white. As a result, some brands go to the extent of using chemical treatments to bleach the shell, making them look "Fair and Lovely." This isn’t just misleading—it’s potentially harmful. At Bolas, we choose to keep it real. As a policy, we use pistachios in their natural form, stains and all, because we believe that when you’re eating for health, you should get a product that’s truly healthy and safe. But we face backlash both from end-consumers as well as our Private Label/ Institutional customers. How do we shift this mindset? How do we convince consumers that Daag Ache Hai—that these natural marks are a sign of authenticity and purity, not a flaw? 🗣 Calling on fellow brands and industry leaders: How do we tackle this issue together? Gunjan Jain Deepak Agrawal Yash Gawdi Vijeta Gawdi Sameer Bhanushali 🎯 Tagging Marketing Boards of Pistachios: Would it be a good start to show pistachios in their natural form in the advertisements before the brands follow suit in packaging? Sumit Saran American Pistachio Growers Archana M. Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds Let’s move towards a future where health and transparency are the true measures of quality—because when it comes to pistachios, daag ache hai!
