Christopher Perez is a dedicated healthcare executive and clinician driven by the mission to help improve the delivery of mental healthcare. Axis IMH provides innovative, patient centric mental health care.
Let's hope this rule helps patients gain access to the mental healthcare they need, while also giving practices like ours the ability to fight for fair and timely reimbursement. Currently, many practices are experiencing significant delays in reimbursement for care delivered. 60, 90, and 120 day reimbursement delays are becoming more common. However, we as providers have very little recourse when these delays occur. It's time for more accountability from the major payers to ensure that practices of all size be paid fairly and in a timely manner so that we can focus on our core job. Helping patients heal.
BREAKING: The White House on Monday announced a final rule designed to expand access to mental health care coverage by putting it on par with physical health care coverage. Here's what you need to know. https://bit.ly/4gkJHZS

A new landmark report from NAMI reveals a stark reality: access to in-network mental health care is significantly more challenging than for other medical services. Some key findings: 🟡 Out-of-Network Rates: Mental health and substance use treatments are accessed out-of-network 3.5 times more often than medical/surgical treatments. 🟡 Disproportionate Costs: Individuals seeking psychiatric help face out-of-network rates as high as 18.2% compared to just 2.2% for primary care. 🟡 Reimbursement Discrepancies: Mental health providers are reimbursed 22% less than their medical/surgical counterparts for in-network services. Why is this happening? Read the full report from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): https://lnkd.in/gef7XyTa

One step forward, two steps back. While appreciative of the advances made to make mental healthcare more accessible, clinicians and patients need to continue to advocate for the cause. Back in 2008, the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (also known as the mental health parity law or federal parity law) made it a legal requirement for coverage of services for mental health, behavioral health and substance-use disorders to be comparable to physical health coverage. According to the @APA “The federal parity law requires insurance companies to treat mental and behavioral health and substance use disorder coverage equal to (or better than) medical/surgical coverage. That means that insurers must treat financial requirements equally. For example, an insurance company can’t charge a $40 copay for office visits to a mental health professional such as a psychologist if it only charges a $20 copay for most medical/surgical office visits.” Even today, there are new roadblocks, including potentially improper termination of care. While there have been advancements, instances like these, where an insurer is accused of limiting care, remind us we are just not there yet. https://lnkd.in/gmZ4PUuZ
