Dr. Jie Huang, a researcher at Missouri University of Science and Technology, is spearheading the creation of a technology capable of disease diagnosis through breath analysis. This novel sensor can detect Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in real-time, potentially enabling early detection of chronic illnesses such as lung, kidney, and pancreatic cancer. However, clinical trials await funding for this promising home-based health diagnostic tool. Today, there is an interesting article on the New York Times, “All the Alzheimer’s Research We Didn’t Do”, e.g., is Hydroxychloroquine useful for AD patients? Some experts guess so. But designing a rigorous clinical trial to test this hypothesis is almost impossible, at least in the near future, when A-beta hypothesis still dominates. Then, how about RWE? In patients with SLE, the risk of Alzheimer's disease was 1.4 times higher than non-SLE control. Hydroxychloroquine is approved for the treatment of SLE. Does Hydroxychloroquine slow down early AD progress for SLE patients in real world? My point is, when formal clinical trials are not possible, we may think about RWE instead, to explore our hypothesis.

It's #GlobalALSAwarenessDay so we're happy to share our poster, "Co-creation of new digital outcome measures in ALS" that outlines Aparito's approach to developing novel outcome measures for #ALS patients. 📋 Background ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that leads to severe disability and loss of voluntary muscle control. The progression of the disease makes it challenging for ALS patients to visit clinics regularly or participate in clinical trials. Remote monitoring and the development of digital outcome measures can help overcome these barriers by enabling remote monitoring, participation in clinical trials, and meaningful measurement of outcomes. ➡️ Aim of this study Aparito’s Patient Group Accelerator and ALS Liga Belgium have collaborated to develop digital endpoints that capture the meaningful aspects of health (MAH), concepts of interest (COI), and outcomes to be measured for ALS patients. We aim to test the usability and clinical utility of these digital outcome measures using the Atom5™ #eCOA platform.
