I can't believe I did this. A few weeks ago I was in California, visiting my father. One day, we went to Costco. Among the items on the list was toilet paper. I don’t live in the US, and the last time I shopped for American toilet paper, nobody’d heard of Gmail because it didn’t yet exist. We got to the aisle, when I saw it. I stopped. As my dad was comparing prices, I said, “I’m sorry, I can’t. I have to do this.” You can groan if you want. But yes. I did it. I squeezed the Charmin Paper Products Co . 😲 😲 😲 😲 Mr. Whipple and his “don’t squeeze the Charmin” are one of the most hated ads in the industry. According to the Baltimore Sun, it’s one of the most hated commercials of all time. And yet… In the 1970s, Whipple was the most recognized face in America after President Nixon. When the actor who played Whipple would enter 5-star restaurants, everyone wanted his autograph. Most of all? The guy sold billions of rolls of toilet paper. And I’m still squeezing Charmin. So Whipple and Charmin were onto something. What? Here’s my take. **THE TAGLINE WAS EPIC** Whatever you think about Whipple, “don’t squeeze the Charmin” is a killer tagline. It nails the most important benefit of the product while getting brand recognition for the name. There’s…not a whole lot of unique selling propositions for toilet paper. But there are a whole lot of brands. By linking the USP and the brand name in one short, punchy sentence, Charmin and softness were linked together in the minds of millions of people. **TAKEAWAY**: Most important benefit + product name = an epic tagline that sells, big time. 🧻 🧻 🧻 🧻 **THE CHARACTER WAS…A CHARACTER** Whether Whipple was annoying, endearing, or obnoxious, a sweet little man or a total dork — he was a character. Had Charmin taken the same tagline and filmed it in random stores with random storekeepers, it would've still been a great tagline. But would it become iconic? I say no. **TAKEAWAY**: An epic tagline + a memorable character = a virtually unstoppable campaign. 🧻 🧻 🧻 🧻 **THE CAMPAIGN TOOK ITS TIME** Mr. Whipple and his “don’t squeeze the Charmin” ran from 1964-1985. Put another way: Whipple was there when Reagan became governor for the first time, and president for the second. He saw the last chopper out of Saigon and the first woman astronaut. And he saw the invention of the cordless phone and the first Macintosh computer. For 21 years, no matter what was happening in the world, Mr. Whipple was there watching it with you, pleading with you not to squeeze the Charmin. Brands today ignore this, at their own peril: It takes time to enter people’s minds. And even longer to enter their hearts. You may not like Mr. Whipple. But you’d love your sales to look like his. **TAKEAWAY**: Relationships take time. Brand loyalty takes time. Have patience, people. This was #throwbackthursday.
