💥 When Is a Head of Marketing Not Just a Head of Marketing? 💥 A conversation today got me thinking about how marketing roles in scale-ups often go far beyond their title. I see this all the time - one marketer expected to be a Swiss Army knife, covering: 💼 Sales qualification calls 💼Full pipeline ownership in the CRM 💼Customer success 💼Product feedback loops 💼Website rebuilds 💼Events, PR, and content 🫣 Oh, and delivering a marketing strategy -with a £20k total budget (MarTech included!). It’s not just theory; I’m seeing it more and more. While this kind of broad exposure can be great for career development, it also means core marketing strategy gets diluted, and burnout becomes a real risk. Yes, start-ups need adaptable people. But if your company is growing and profitable, investing in proper marketing budgets and building structured teams isn’t a luxury - it’s essential. The other day, I was chatting with a friend about how I ended up in #B2Bmarketing, and to say it was a carefully planned choice would be... well, not true. It just kind of… happened. I started as a marketing assistant, working on web content, copywriting, and PR. It was a great intro, but I didn’t know where it would take me. Then came my first #B2B role—a role that, in hindsight, wasn’t clearly defined. (I’ll save that story for another time.) After that, I focused on #B2C, managing paid and organic #socialmedia. But eventually, B2B pulled me back in. That’s when things really began to take shape: partner marketing, web content, social media, event marketing, lead generation, case studies—you name it. For a while, I called myself a #MarketingGeneralist. And honestly, I’m so glad I took that path. It taught me versatility, opened doors to so many opportunities, and helped me figure out what I was good at and what I loved most. If you’re starting your career in #marketing (or any field), here’s my advice: Don’t stress about specializing too soon. Try different things. Build a broad foundation. Over time, your strengths and passions will guide you. LinkedIn can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re just starting your career. It often looks like everyone has a plan, a purpose, and a perfectly polished path to success. The truth? Not really—or at least not for everyone. Behind every polished post is someone who’s faced uncertainty, pivoted paths, and learned as they went. Don’t be discouraged—your path is yours to discover.

3 things I've learned in my first 3 weeks as Marketing Executive for the UK's leading Rec2Rec agency (SW6 Associates) ... 🌟Consistency is EVERYTHING. In the same consistent manner the team of recruiters build new relationships with new candidates and clients, I am inspired to be consistent with posting. Testing the waters and evaluating what content succeeds aids the process of perfecting personable branding. 🌟 AI is friend, not foe. I can't be the only creative person who has previously experienced severe apprehension about AI diminishing individual artistry. Throughout my last few weeks, I have discovered how AI can be healthily used in an office setting to speed up processes and generate trustworthy information. A balanced combination of human-driven creativity with the speed and credibility of AI, results in great success. 🌟 The impact of a positive team! Working alongside a team of motivated individuals that ooze genuine passion for what they do indicates how positivity in the workplace is infectious. With team competitions and incentives in the mix, my colleagues are both relentlessly hardworking but also incredibly encouraging of one another's wins. It's really refreshing to see. There's no other team of people I'd rather shove a camera in their faces to make TikTok content with ;) What's the biggest lesson you've learned in your current career? Absolutely love picking up pearls of wisdom from others on LinkedIn.

Get specific on your LinkedIn profile! Especially when it comes to marketing roles, the necessary skills can vary vastly from role to role. So getting really specific on your profile helps recruiters and hiring managers know upfront if you'd be a good fit for the role. For example: If you're a content marketer, don't just say 'content marketing'. Is it internal communications or social media? Email marketing or video production? If you do startup marketing, were you the first marketing hire for the company? Did you build out the marketing function or a marketing team from the ground up? Adding specifics to your LinkedIn profile helps recruiters and hiring managers know how your experience translates to what they are looking for.
