Today, Inspiration is closed in observance of Juneteenth. We recognize the importance of this solemn observance of the final end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. The holiday is important for so many reasons but especially to us as a company headquartered in Washington, DC. If you didn’t know, DC is a historically black city, and where the abolition of slavery began back in April 1862. Whether or not you have the day off, we encourage you to expand your knowledge of and reflect on why this holiday is so important. Linked below is an excellent history of the holiday and its legacy, provided by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. 🖤 ❤️ 💚 💛

From 1865 to Today: The Evolving Legacy of Juneteenth Let's talk about Juneteenth, a day that marks a pivotal moment in American history. Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has sparked conversations and celebrations nationwide. But why is this day so significant? Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers brought the long-awaited news of freedom to enslaved people in Texas — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It's a stark reminder of the resilience and strength of those who fought for liberty. Today, Juneteenth is more than a historical date, and we recognize it by supporting Black-owned businesses, listening to Black voices, and educating ourselves about the significance of Juneteenth. As we continue to observe Black History Month, on Day 6, I would like to draw attention to a significant historical moment narrated brilliantly in "Island on Fire: The Revolt That Ended Slavery in the British Empire" by Tom Zoellner. This extensively researched book offers a detailed account of the 1831 slave rebellion in Jamaica, which was a pivotal event in bringing an end to slavery across the British Empire. "Island on Fire" not only chronicles the events of the rebellion but also delves into its causes and aftermath, offering insights into the resilience and bravery of those who fought for their freedom. Zoellner's account brings to life the stories of individuals involved, from the enslaved people who risked their lives to the plantation owners who opposed their efforts, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of this complicated chapter in history. Let us take this opportunity to honor the bravery of those who paved the way for freedom and continue to inspire the fight for justice today. #BlackHistoryMonth #IslandOnFire #FightForFreedom #Abolition #HumanRights #HistoricalReflection

June 19th, 1865 is the day enslaved Texans learned of their emancipation… two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s important to understand that the work of achieving and communicating emancipation fell largely on enslaved people themselves. And it’s important for us to acknowledge and celebrate this day because it’s how we begin grow out of leaving the work and responsibility for restoring and/or acheiving the American principles of freedom and equality to marginalized and systematically disempowered groups and individuals. It’s a good day to remember that Black History is American History, and it’s all of our work. https://lnkd.in/g6C_he8t
