As summarized by #ASHA & #ASHAAdvocacy, President Biden signed into law the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 (H.R. 2882). "H.R. 2882 will fund key health and education programs administered by the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services for the remainder of the fiscal year. Among other things, this law: • Preserves funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act • Maintains funding for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act • Sustains funding for evolving communication sciences and disorders and rehabilitation research • Provides funding to support research on developmental delays, including speech and language delays • Supports research on the development of lower-cost and high-sensitivity prenatal diagnosis and newborn screening technologies to detect Congenital Cytomegalovirus. Though it doesn’t contain the amount of growth we'd like to see, H.R. 2882 is beneficial for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and everyone who relies on their services as it protects programs and policies that were facing serious hurdles." https://lnkd.in/g7R4zjhz

I am an MNZAS audiologist, Owner/director of Kapiti Hearing Ltd, Convenor, Independent Audiologists NZ.
I wanted to repost this from Nicole Eglinton, sent to me by a colleague. Why wouldn't audiologists want to safeguard the people we look after? It's also a good way of safeguarding the profession. Surveys of audiologists and audiometrists carried out by Independent Audiologists NZ and Independent Audiologists Australia have found that 98% of audiologists/audiometrists want to be registered. We need to start exploring the options. Nicole Eglinton Nicole Eglinton (She/Her) • 2nd (She/Her) • 2nd CEO / Principal Audiologist at All Ears and Speech and Little Allied Health CEO / Principal Audiologist at All Ears and Speech and Little Allied Health 10h • 10h • Connect Connect with Nicole Eglinton There is nothing more important this Hearing Awareness Week than uniting for a cause that truly matters: ensuring the safety and quality of care for our community who are deaf or hard of hearing. Registration of audiologists is not just a formality—it's a crucial step in safeguarding the well-being of the children and adults we support. While registration is unlikely to have prevented the cochlear implant programming issues in South Australia and other states, registration would have provided consumers and others with an avenue to report and have their concerns investigated promptly. It is certainly an important part of moving forward. We are at a pivotal time in our profession. Let's bring the pride and joy back into Audiology - raising our standards and fostering a culture of psychological safety, camaraderie, and collaboration. Even after the trauma of the last few years - I love being an audiologist, I embrace the potential we have to improve the quality of life for others and I feel privileged that so many let us share in their hearing healthcare journey. #SafeguardOurCommunity #RegistrationMatters #AudiologyExcellence

According to studies, in the last year, one in twelve children between the ages of three and seventeen have experienced a voice, speech, language, or swallowing impairment, and only just over half of these children receive the help they need. According to the research, children with communication impairments struggle with voice, swallowing, speech, language, or all four, and roughly one-third of them combine two or more of these issues. When communication is a challenge, we can help. Every kiddo has different traits and aspects of themselves that make them different and unique. That does not mean less than or wrong. Some children are born deaf and require a hearing aid or cochlear implant to hear. Some children are diagnosed with non-verbal conditions and require a speech generating device to express their wants and needs. Others have difficulty walking and require walking aids or a wheelchair. No matter the difference that is present, all of these children are still children. They deserve to be heard and understood, even when it is difficult. Although treatment ideally begins early, it is never too late to get help. 🚨 INVESTIGATION: 1,540 children across England have been misdiagnosed by NHS paediatric audiology unuts. Leaked NHS England documents marked 'official sensitive, restricted and confidential' (🤣) detail widespread systemic failings at 90 units. Insiders say NHSE hasn't acted despite evidence of the scale of harm for over a year. 480 children have been moderately or severely harmed, in other words left without hearing aids and at risk of permanent development delays. Health secretary Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP was only briefed about the crisis on Friday last week. He told me: "This is an appalling state of affairs...it is outrageous that these failings will have potentially serious developmental consequences for children." A whistleblower said: "NHS England has known this for a year, but no money has been allocated to sort it out and nothing has been done publicly until just the past week and even that is not enough. “We've lost a whole school year - we have forgotten the children in all of this.” Read the full investigation: https://lnkd.in/eJkztRns #nhs #patientsafety #nhsaudiology #children #nhsengland

Happy to be a part of this work addressing stigma in d/Deaf and hard of hearing populations: The Lancet Commission on Hearing Loss has developed a suite of interconnected stigma measures designed for use with people who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/DHH), as well as their parents, care partners, and health care providers, plus special measures for hearing device stigma and ageism. Find out more about these measures, their preliminary validation in the United States and Ghana, and a plan for how they can help end d/DHH stigma in this special supplement to Ear and Hearing (free to access for two years after publication): https://lnkd.in/ermUtKUg
