One thing I'm passionate about is talking about #nematodes. I love teaching it to others. It's even more fun to me when I use my hand drawings to teach it to others. Picture description: I was explaining the lifecycle of entomopathogenic nematodes to internship students at the Bamidele Fawole Nematology Laboratory, department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, University of Ibadan. #nematodes #nematology

Ph.D. Opportunities at Western Sydney University (Australia) - Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) is offering two research scholarships to highly motivated PhD candidates to study pollinator abundance, diversity and behavior in native seed production areas, and how pollinators influence plant mating patterns and seed quality. The project is co-funded by Greening Australia, Western Sydney University's Graduate Research School, and the Ian Potter Foundation. See the attached for details. #ecology #plants #seeds

“The degree is hard work, but you build connections and build memories that make the experience worth it." From the classroom to the lab, Josie Griffith ('24) made connections and pursued research as a Graduate Assistant (GA) on the Hill. “After my undergraduate degree… I wanted to branch out from invasive species work so finding a project that dealt with the conservation of native species was important. I found my current lab and the research topic fell in my area of interest as it would be working with native imperiled stonefly species.” As a GA, Josie assisted with teaching BIO123 - helping Hilltoppers build their research skills and learn about evolution, the diverse forms of life, and ecology in a hands-on lab. “Every student comes from a different background and having the opportunity to share knowledge with these individuals is my top highlight of this program.” Josie says her program created a welcoming environment where they are willing to go the extra mile for each other. The support from faculty and members of her cohort helps her achieve her goals as a conservation biologist. "Juggling everything that comes with this program can feel overwhelming at times, but everyone is there to support each other in any way they can. The courses that are offered help to expand your knowledge base and build skills that are useful for the future. The faculty within the department want to see everyone within the program succeed.” For anyone considering graduate school, Josie specifically highlighted the importance of your advisor. "Finding an advisor that is a good fit is very important to personal success and my current advisor is one of the reasons I chose this program.” Learn more about the WKU Graduate School at https://wku.edu/gradschool #WKU #HigherEducation #GradSchool #GradSchoolTips #Research #AppliedLearning #Biology #STEM #WomenInSTEM #Science #Ecology #Conservation #Teaching #GraduateAssistant #Biology Ogden College of Science & Engineering, Western Kentucky University WKU Graduate School

🪷🦢I'm thrilled to announce my very first published scientific paper! My 2023 science extension research paper on wetlands and waterbird ecology has been published in The Journal of Science Extension Research – Vol. 3, 2024! Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gk-eTF8H 🦆 The title is "Evaluation of the impact of major human activities on the habitat suitability of coastal freshwater wetlands as a species rich ecosystem for waterbirds", it includes a Literature Review, Scientific Report and Appendix! 🌳 📜 "The third volume of this scientific journal is a celebration of students' achievements in scientific research in the Science Extension course. It illustrates the depth and quality of scientific output that our inspired high school science students can produce when unfettered by content-driven investigations."

Two 'Tansy days' in a row! You can almost smell the terpenoids! Today, a very nice paper got published online in Plant Biology - led by my colleague Lina Ojeda-Prieto as part of her PhD. This paper describes a field experiment that we started in May '21 and have closely monitored since. In this experiment, we manipulated the number of Tansy chemotypes that were present in a plot. Although the main focus of the experiment is on insect community assembly, we were also very interested in how plants performed in these different plot compositions. We found that particularly the reproductive traits appear to be heavily affected by the chemotype richness of a plot, and that this relationship depended on the specific chemotypes. This paper provides the basis for future publications detailing insect community responses, which Lina is diligently working on, and we hope to submit soon. It's also an important paper for my latest new colleague Elikplim Aku Setordjie, who will join our team later this month. She will use this ongoing experiment to unravel the consequences of chemical diversity for above-belowground interactions, including ants and aphids. Find the paper and graphical abstract in Lina's post below:

🌿 I'm happy to share with you the publication of my latest paper in the Special Issue: Ecology and Evolution of Plant Chemodiversity of the #PlantBiologyJournal! This time, we looked at the effect of #intraspecific chemical variation within #Tanacetumvulgare on plant growth and reproductive traits using a manipulative field setting. 🖼 Here is the graphical abstract 📄 You can read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/deAn9Jy4 This paper represents over three years of dedication of a fantastic team, from the initial stages of preparation to data collection and analysis. It also constitutes the second chapter of my doctoral thesis and marks a significant milestone in my academic journey. 👥 I thank my coauthors, Pamela Medina van Berkum, Sybille Unsicker, Robin Heinen, and Wolfgang Weisser, for their invaluable contributions and collaboration. 🌱 Additionally, I'm immensely thankful to friends and colleagues for their support during the harvests. 🙏 This research wouldn't have been possible without the funding of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation, as part of the Research Unit (RU) #FOR3000. #PlantEcology #Chemodiversity #ResearchPublication Technical University of Munich

🚢🌊 Exciting News! My Research on Gamified E-Learning in Marine Ecology Education Published in Environmental Education Research! 🌊🚢 I’m thrilled to share my latest research exploring the power of gamified e-learning for marine ecology education, specifically designed for Iranian maritime students. In this study, I aimed to discover if gamification could boost engagement and enhance learning outcomes in a marine-focused course. 🌍 Why it Matters: Given Iran’s geographical distance from the coast, marine ecology is often challenging to teach. Through gamification, we made marine education more accessible, immersive, and meaningful for students in inland areas. This research underscores the potential of gamified e-learning in specialized fields like marine ecology, making complex subjects engaging and achievable even in areas with limited access. For more insights, check out Environmental Education Research — a leading journal dedicated to advancing environmental and sustainability education worldwide, with a Q1 ranking, a 2023 impact factor of 2.6, and a CiteScore of 6.1. Thank you for your support! https://lnkd.in/ejBeYk3U

6moDeadline has been extended to April 30, so don't hesitate to apply. A timely subject, great teachers involved, and a nice and friendly international atmosphere! Not to mention fireworks of the national day just before this event, wine and cheese, and an evening at the beach in Camargue! Montpellier can be easily reached by train, buses... even by airplane but try to avoid it if possible! Waiting to see you there!
