Geothermal set to produce 28GWe of power by 2030, 110GWe by 2050. According to Rystad Energy, #geothermal appears set to increase its contribution to the #energytransition in the coming years as awareness and investment increases. Having seen forecasts for wind and solar revised up year on year in the past as forecasts across the board were outpaced by reality, I wonder… will geothermal - a source of clean baseload power often overlooked historically - do the same over the next two and a half decades? Link to read Rystad’s thoughts on the subject, below.
Geothermal energy is set to play a significant, albeit small role in the power mix of the future, building on its current modest 0.3% share of the world’s power supply. As global economies ramp up their efforts to decarbonize, the importance of renewable baseload energy sources such as geothermal is expected to increase in the coming years. Read our special insight from Shruti Raghuram, Senior Analyst on our geothermal team, to learn more about the accelerated growth of the market. https://lnkd.in/dd5qbThZ #geothermalenergy #geothermalmarket #powersuppy

I think it would be fair to add the word 'Historically' in front of the statement in the article that says: "Apart from the fact that current geothermal projects are heavily location restricted, a major barrier holding the industry back is the risk borne by the developer. Geothermal projects are often considered high risk due to the many uncertainties involved, such as subsurface conditions and recoverable resource volumes" The risks and uncertainties involved in deep reservoir independent geothermal projects are significantly lower than the historic majority of hydrothermal (reservoir dependent) developments. Reservoir independent geothermal is also not particularly location dependent in the same manner as hydrothermal. There is also no match in exploration risk between Geothermal and O&G success rates. All in all I would say that the article is a 'rear view mirror' look at geothermal potential that overstates the risks and understates the future potential that recent technology and process improvements, particularly in well construction will bring. I would encourage the team Rystad to take a more realistic future view of the potential of the whole geothermal sector.

On yesterday's Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive radio programme, Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones highlighted the importance of geothermal as a resource in Aotearoa's renewable energy supply. Referencing the supercharged geothermal resource accessed with deeper drilling efforts, he describes this as part of the suite of renewable resources that the country requires to allow for its increasing electricity demand. "We have an inordinately rich resource in New Zealand which is the geothermal energy." You can hear the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gP3w7RNc #geothermal #geothermalenergy #renewable #sustainable
