Relief echoed across the EU when the results of the European and French elections were announced, as the threat of the extreme right parties in some countries was averted, at least for now. But what comes next? How will policymakers address the cost of living and social equity concerns while sticking to their international pledges and proceeding with the implementation of the green transition? For those with an interest in corporate sustainability and human rights in business check out MFAT's latest Market Intelligence Report on the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) which is now a step closer to coming into force later this year. The CSDDD builds on recently enacted human rights due diligence legislation in a number of EU member states and a number of human rights and sustainability-related reporting laws including modern slavery legislation in Australia, UK, and Canada. Key takeaway - NZ businesses which trade with or in the EU should begin thinking about how they might map their human rights and environmental risks if required to, and what action they might take if negative impacts were identified. The #EU 🇪🇺 has agreed to introduce new mandatory requirements for corporate due diligence reporting, on the environmental and social impacts of certain companies. These are expected to enter into force following European elections in June 2024 ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gQp-dRAv

On June 11, The Brookings Institution will convene a panel of experts to discuss what the #EuropeanParliament #elections results mean for European #democracy, #defense and #security, and trans-Atlantic relations. "Against the backdrop of a darkening #geopolitical landscape and with far-right #populists polling well across the EU, these elections will affect coalition-building in the parliament as well as the composition of the bloc’s executive. This in turn will determine the direction of the EU’s policy on key issues such as #migration, enlargement to #Ukraine and other countries, trade, and #climate policy".

The recent EU elections signal a potential shift in Europe's political landscape, with a rise in far-right support and losses for the liberal Renew party. The centre-right European People's Party (EPP) emerged as the only centrist party to gain seats, and while the EPP could once again join a grand coalition with the socialists and liberals, it may also negotiate with right-leaning parties, possibly tilting the EU policy agenda to the right. Should we be worried? What would this mean for EU politics, the future of its policies like the Green Deal, and its outlook on international trade and relations especially with ASEAN? And, what should businesses look out for? Get your questions answered in this webinar on 21 June, Friday. Register here now to stay ahead. The European elections take place this week. All parties and all countries are convinced they know what the main issues are. We can talk about "migration" or "Security" or "economics" till we're blue in the face but it's worth keeping something else in mind. Europe is at its best when it does things that no single European country can do on its on. The space programme is one key example. No country can do that alone, but we are stronger together. Every issue needs to be seen through this prism - for example, should migration be a pan-European thing or should it be a national one? We cannot ask Europe to solve a problem but also want the problem to be solved in "our way". Your vote in the European election this week will reflect how much Europe you want; it won't represent a single issue.
