Careers practitioner/counsellor. Career Management. Outplacement. Lecturer in Mental Health and Community Services, Wellbeing and Counselling
Its interesting that most reputable universities and organisations view experience as being of great importance when hiring someone or accepting individuals to study a qualification. I have personally experienced this myself. How much emphasis should be given to experience as opposed to obtaining a qualification? Also, when we look at different qualifications there are many modules that cross between quals. In the case of mental health, counselling and various others in these fields, we find that knowledge around therapies, theories such as trauma-informed care are included in all . I am somewhat disappointed to see that some institutes who align with these practices are still focused more on the qualification and do not consider similarities between qualifications or years of experience in the field as important as having specific qualifications. Maybe it is time to open our minds up. Are we saying that coming straight out of university with a degree with little or no experience should entitle that individual to join institutes such as ACA, and PACFA and AHPRA and will have the opportunity to proceed to a higher level where those with many years of experience cannot. This is also a contradiction relating to university and industry perspective. I have been concerned about this for some time and would love to see this situation reviewed by these institutions. Its time for change!!! experience is an essential in the work we do.

Psychological safety is key to engagement and openess to learn. How often do we take time to unpick interactions that are uncomfortable? Reflective practice within preceptorship enables deeper learnings from session concepts and self. Simple. Identifying the elephant in the room and being brave to say it and explore it for our own learning is more complex. Space to listen, be non judgemental and explore our own potential solutions enables personal and professional growth. Unplanned but necessary learning to help rebuild psychological safety. Proud of our AHPs identifying the elephant and being willing to confront it.

CPD is about so much more than ‘doing courses’. There are a variety of things that you can do to contribute towards your own CPD. There are many ways you can learn new things and anything that enhances your knowledge and develops your skills to better equip you to serve your clients better can count as CPD. Professional and personal development is a continuous journey of self-improvement and skill enhancement that is essential for complementary therapists. This process involves a proactive approach to acquiring new knowledge, refining therapeutic techniques, and cultivating personal growth to ensure the highest standards of client care and personal well-being. For complementary therapists, professional development encompasses ongoing education and training to stay current with the latest advancements in therapy modalities, while personal development focuses on self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and the cultivation of resilience and balance in one’s personal life. With so many MHPs voicing out their opinions on the new guidelines by RCI regarding B.Sc Clinical Psychology, here are my two (unpopular) cents: After doing a regular master's degree, there would only be a few who found themselves equipped enough to start practicing. Most of us were held by imposter and low self-esteem due to the poor course structures, and had to go through, and even do till date, supervisions and additional courses. Capitalist it may sound, but to ensure good MHPs who are ethical, knowledgeable and well-trained, RCI shall mandate additional trainings or certain number of pre-licensing hours or at least an exam, as a criteria for licensing. Regardless to say that an MHP has the power to harm someone (unintentionally), but it is also the duty of the "regulatory bodies" to make sure that noone can through regulations. Also we, who have gone through the grind of Bachelors+ Masters, need some answers for ourselves! :) What are your opinions on the new licensing procedure? #RCI #counsellingpsychologist

American Psychologist John Dewey stated "We do not learn from experience...we learn from reflecting on experience". The HCPC defines reflection as “…a process which helps you gain insight into your professional practice by thinking analytically about any element of it”. Kolb's (1984) reflective cycle is a model widely used in #ClinicalSupervision. Whether you are in a clinical or managerial role. If you are in a clinical role, you can also write up a reflective piece towards revalidation. Clinical Supervision is all about the importance of using reflection to learn and develop in your communication skills, your practice, creative ways on how you can expand your knowledge, and understanding there are more ways than one to approach a situation at work or organisational changes. Reflection is crucial to learning and growth in best practice.

OT Supervisor - (PG Cert Clinical supervision) - Independent Occupational Therapist - Children, Young People and Families - Extensive experience – Self-employed.
Love this post from Sarah GMBPsS highlighting the importance of reflective practice for our learning. Using Kolbs learning cycle as the example. Therapist and HCPC registered practitioners need to demonstrate how they have used reflective practice through there #cpd activities. This model is an excellent tool to use in your CPD evidence. #occupationaltherapists #independentOT #schoolbasedOT #clinicOT #diverseOT

What it takes...
DNAP⚕️MSN🧑🏾⚕️CRNA |⚓Active Duty Navy ⚓ |🎖️Master Facilitator in Healthcare Communication |👨🏽🏫Assistant Professor at USUHS| Top Medical Talent✨Senior Partner
Everybody thinks it's easy to become a CRNA. But it took me years to achieve this highly specialized role. Here's why people get this goal wrong: • Underestimate the Education: You will study day and night • Neglect Clinical Experience: Not realizing the necessity of hands-on experience in critical care settings. • Misjudge Exam Difficulty: Assuming the exams are a walk in the park. • Overlook Continuing Education: Forgetting that learning doesn’t stop after certification. • Ignore Emotional Resilience: Underestimating the emotional and mental fortitude required. Harsh, but true. Keep these in mind the next time you're reading generic advice online.
