A recent study by CBRE Asia Pacific shows the role of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) has become more relevant and influential over the past decade, particularly since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Signatory countries, including many in Asia Pacific, have committed to decarbonisation targets, albeit at different paces and levels, and are driving sustainability goals in both the public and private sectors, typically through a carrot-and-stick approach. At the corporate level, the climate action agenda has prompted many organisations in the real estate sector to appoint CSOs to strategise on environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.
