Medical conditions are certainly associated with the risk of suicide, and the more severe the diseases, the higher the risk. Any physician who sees patients can attest to this fact! But since I also lead drug development programs, this is important to keep in mind. As we develop drugs to treat chronic and debilitating illnesses, we may see subjects display suicidal ideation. The FDA has begun to pay attention to this as well. However, sometimes, getting a little bit better can actually worsen the risk of suicide. Remember antidepressants and the risk there. Mental health, including suicidal ideation, is something that needs more attention in drug development programs, and we need better tools to monitor and assess mental health.

Hospital stays are traumatic. When you start with that framing, these research findings are not that surprising. A recent study by the University of Washington highlights the potential of integrating mental health services through digital health and virtual channels to slash rehopitalization rates nearly in half. Hospitalizations due to traumatic injuries often lead to mental health challenges, with up to 40% facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study, led by Dr. Laura Prater, unveils a three-step program that significantly improved outcomes for patients, emphasizing enhanced mental health care during hospitalization and access post-discharge. 📈 Results are staggering: traditional care led to 31% rehospitalization after 12-15 months, while the intervention program cut that to an impressive 17%. The power of immediate digital health tools, offering on-demand services, played a pivotal role in supporting patients and families throughout their recovery journey. This study echoes findings from Vanderbilt University, emphasizing the urgency of reshaping post-discharge care to address the traumatic nature of hospital stays and enhance access to mental health services. Psychiatry has definitely fallen short in helping those with chronic mental health conditions. I speak daily with individuals who have battled depression for decades and tried numerous medications without success. Labeled as treatment-resistant, they often face self-blame and lack of hope in their recovery. It’s heartbreaking to hear their struggles. At the Healing Depression Project, we support implementing the ketogenic diet as part of a metabolic psychiatry approach for treating mental health conditions, such as chronic depression, and recognize its potential for lasting symptom relief.
