Operation Crayweed, co-founded and led by UNSW marine ecologist Professor Adriana Verges, is expanding and accelerating its kelp restoration efforts with the support of The Ian Potter Foundation. Operation Crayweed has been replanting crayweed at several sites along the Sydney coastline in the aim of re-establishing the vibrant kelp forests that have been lost from these areas. The Operation has already shown positive outcomes, and with grant funding from The Ian Potter Foundation, it will now be implemented at 10 other critical sites. The grant will also partner Operation Crayweed with the Kelp Forest Alliance until 2027 to share models of best practice with a global community of kelp conservationists, and with AIME to engage local communities and develop a deeper connection to our underwater world. Last month, I was fortunate enough to attend the launch of Prof. David Lindenmayer's newest book, "The Forest Wars", hosted by Nature Conservation Council NSW in Glebe. The book uses decades of peer reviewed science to systematically debunk and dismantle dozens of myths propagated by Australia's unsustainable native logging industry, who for many years have successfully used spin, greenwash, and outright lies to keep this destructive industry alive, instead of embracing the future - a plantation-based industry. The book also gives insight into the bipartisan politics of dodgy deals and corruption that allow this environmental vandalism to continue against the public interest. As I've been reading through the book, one statistic has stood out to me as particularly shocking. In reference to the native forest logging operations in a single catchment in Victoria: "By 2050, ongoing logging there will have reduced water yields by an amount equivalent to that used by 650,000 people. ... This reduction in water yield due to logging could have a greater impact on Melbourne's water supply than climate change." European Union legislation to restore habitats to their natural state entered into force on 11 August 2024. Under the legislation, Member States must implement measures to restore at least 20% of the EU's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. The regulation sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, particularly those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. We just published a new paper combining ecological risk assessment and hydrodynamic modeling for the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, and how specific ash-laden contaminants would pollute both nearby and distant (>25km away) marine habitats. This Risk Quotient Plume model will indicate where ecological resources are being threatened, as well as what geographical areas are at potential risk and should be further investigated to determine contaminant loads in recreational and subsistence fisheries. The paper is Open Access. This article includes researchers from U.S. NOAA, universities in Iran, Hainan University in China, McMaster Univ in Canada, and U.S. conservation and science NGOs. 🐟 In a new paper by Lu et al. researchers developed a statistical method to explain why the abundance of brook trout in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park varies from stream to stream! Just imagine if we had acted in the best interested of the planet's ecology and environment 54 years ago. Instead we have an even bigger crisis to deal with.

Scenario analysis is an integral part of the Classification Process, an approach for determing environmental flow allocations in South Africa. Gwyneth Letley and Jane Turpie of Anchor spent the day training goverment officials on setting up and comparing scenarios which prioritise conventional development, green economy development, or the strategic spatial targeting of a mixture of these, to find the best balance between conservation and use of water and aquatic ecosystems in the Limpopo-Olifants Water Management Area.
