The wonderful Angela Lawlor 🏭 Lawlor kindly dropped a reminder to the ConeX Portal about National Manufacturing Day on Sept 26. It’s a day that some - perhaps most - may not recognise. I know I don’t see a huge amount in my feed about the celebration of the UK manufacturing Industry. Did you also know that on Sept 10th the WorldSkills Competition starts in Lyon? It happens over four days and brings together skills talent from all over the world to compete in an Olympics-style contest covering many technical disciplines. The World Skills website categorises the skills into industry groups – registered under Manufacturing and Engineering Technology are the following skills: Additive Manufacturing CNC Milling CNC Turning Construction Metalwork Electronics Industrial Control Industrial Design Technology Industrial Mechanics Industry 4.0 Manufacturing Team Challenge Mechanical Engineering CAD Mechantronics Optoelectronic Technology Prototype Modelling Rail Vehicle Technology Renewable Energy Robot Systems Integration Water Technology Welding There are reportedly 31 contestants from the UK for the whole WorldSkills Competition. For any manufacturing or engineering business/leader, knowing that there is an abundant pipeline of skills in these categories flourishing in the UK should help with sleepless nights. However I can’t say the pipeline is abundant. I just don’t know, but with only 31 entrants across 62 categories it would suggest it’s not. For the UK Plc to have a more vibrant and growing manufacturing sector, and therefore economy, we need these skills coming through the pipeline. BUT, if we’re not celebrating the young talent that we currently have what’s the incentive for future generations? If you’re reading this and you know any entrants in the manufacturing sector please feel free to give them a tag so can all congratulate them. There is live stream of these events but as far as I can see nothing on any main stream channel……. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all get behind the talent representing the UK? To all the colleges and companies supporting and encouraging these events, kudos 🖐️ And for the rest of us, do you know someone who should be competing in the next WorldSkills Contest? Without greater awareness of these events in the main stream we'll always be pushing water uphill, so please share and spread the news #supportukmfg #ukmfg #shoutaboutukmfg

Today, I officially completed Semester 1 of my B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering at NSUT, with my final exam marking the end of this chapter. Reflecting on the journey so far, starting college felt like closing the chapter of school life and stepping into an entirely new phase. This new chapter brought some positive experiences, such as making new friends and creating a few memorable moments with them. However, it also came with its challenges. I had set my heart on joining some societies I was genuinely passionate about, but unfortunately, I was rejected in the final rounds of Personal Interviews (PIs) and Group Discussions (GDs). My inability to answer questions effectively—likely due to a combination of lack of confidence, underdeveloped communication skills, and insufficient knowledge—played a significant role. Additionally, my struggles with rapid thinking during GDs added to the difficulty. With Semester 2 starting around the New Year, I’ve decided to use this interim period to work on self-improvement. My focus will be on enhancing my communication skills, developing rapid thinking, and building confidence. Alongside, I plan to sharpen my technical skills, as I have a deep interest in technology, and most of the societies I applied to were tech-focused, apart from two non-tech ones. I’m hopeful that with these improvements, I can reapply to these societies with greater confidence and finally secure a place as a member. ***Semester 1 Chapter: Closed***
