✒ ✨ 🛠 NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK ✒ ✨ 🛠
In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, we would like to proudly introduce you to Sam Humphray, (our Technical Engineer Apprentice). Read more about a day in the life of Sam!
Q1 How long have you been an apprentice with TRT Lighting Limited?
I have been an apprentice at TRT for around 5 months.
Q2 How did you hear about the position?
I heard about the opportunity through MIDLAND GROUP TRAINING SERVICES LIMITED (the training providers). I successfully completed and submitted my application through their platform. After applying, I awaited approval and subsequently underwent a test with a benchmark score set at 70%. Upon passing this test, I received an invitation for an initial interview with MGTS. Following the interview, MGTS forwarded my details to various companies, including TRT Lighting. I am grateful that MGTS connected me TRT Lighting.
Q3 What made you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship because I've always been a visual learner. I find that I absorb information more effectively when guided through each step, physically engaging in the process, rather than receiving verbal instructions only.
Q4 What qualification are you aiming towards?
In my first year I am currently aiming to achieve the foundation engineering skills qualification, Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, and have started the first year of my Technical Certificate qualification, Level 3 BTEC in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. High grades in my BTEC such as distinctions will allow me to take my knowledge to a greater level.
Q5 What are your course details?
In the 1st year at MGTS, I am spending approximately 42 weeks completing 10 modules. Most of the modules have 3 different types of assessments, these are to ensure that I have received the adequate training and can demonstrate that I am able to complete the task. After these assessments I must answer up to 30 questions (depending on the topic) to ensure I also understand the practical aspects. Thursdays involve BTEC activities for qualification building. In the 2nd year, I will mainly be at TRT with one day at MGTS to complete my BTEC qualification. In years 3 and 4, I will be permanently based at TRT, guided by an MGTS Training & Development Adviser to monitor my progress. Regular sit-downs assess my knowledge, behaviour, and skills (KBS). The apprenticeship concludes with the End Point Assessment allowing me to showcase my skills and knowledge by submitting a showcase portfolio and undertaking a professional interview.
Q6 How do you unwind after a day at college?
After a day at college, my usual routine involves going home, having tea, and spending some time watching YouTube or Netflix. Later in the evening, I head to the gym.
