This is Joaquin Phoenix’s 2020 Oscar acceptance speech for his performance as the Joker. What I like the most about this speech is the common theme of fighting against injustice. “We’re talking about the fight against injustice. We're talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, or one species has the right to dominate, control and use and exploit another with impunity.” This egocentric belief system creates an environment of scarcity versus one of abundance. Us versus them instead of we’re all in this together. This happens not just individually, but collectively and categorically. This has been going on for centuries and, despite our technological advancements as a human race, we fail to advance our humanity at the same pace. I resonate with his sentiment “that when we use love and compassion as our guiding principles, we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and to the environment.” Thoughts?
