The World Health Organization recognises that traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine can have benefits. It continues to support people in finding ways to integrate practices that are safe, valuable, and successful into health systems worldwide. On #PeopleFixingTheWorld, I discovered a project in Ibadan, Nigeria, where traditional healers, who often use strange and sometimes harmful treatment methods, collaborated with doctors using evidence-based medicine to improve the quality of mental healthcare treatment in parts of the country. Find out how this worked and the challenges it faced here: https://lnkd.in/e_cyYZhF

Localisation should go beyond mere statements. INGOs need to integrate it into their core business development strategy and demonstrate genuine willpower: laying down creative approaches to identify real local organisations, assessing the adequacy of their mission, strength of their programming and capacity building opportunities for them (INGOs such as Corus).

There's so much to unpack in this paper- the crisis in #haiti, the danger to the local healthcare workforce in conflict zones and the shift in protections for #humanitarian responders from protected class to target, the power of mobile surveys in inaccessible territory, the exacerbation of #braindrain, and the fact that #resilience shouldn't be a personal attribute but should conceptually drive policy and intervention towards systems that help people. Nice work Rachel Belt! May this move the needle in Haiti a bit! #umglobalinstitute
The crisis in #haiti is significant but it should not stop research and the opportunities for Haitians to share the impact and reality of the crisis from their perspective. The University of Oxford has partnered with the Center for Haitian Studies to perform a remote survey with Haitian Healthcare providers in 2023. Here is the pre-print: https://lnkd.in/eyQrFHNq #haiti Nadege Jacques Elizabeth Greig, MD

Eye care facilities are limited in rural communities and unfortunately they are often not fully utilised. This non-utilisation has been linked to lack of awareness among those living in these rural communities and also cultural beliefs that treating some eye conditions can actually lead to blindness. This lack of awareness among people in the rural areas can be attributed to their lower literacy level compared to those in the urban area. In Nigeria, there are approximately 400 ophthalmologists servicing the entire population (approximately one per 400 000 people) with a large number of ophthalmologists residing in the urban areas (80%) while about 70% of the Nigerian population live in rural areas.
