Personal Opinion on the Recent News: Worker Dies, 2 in ICU After Inhaling Poisonous Fumes at PUB Choa Chu Kang Worksite (https://lnkd.in/gTxqtD_E) The media, many individuals, and even myself sometimes do not fully appreciate the importance of our work nor do they understand the safety risks involved in the process industry. Perhaps, even an AI would have better reporting sense than SPH at this point in time. This tragic incident was caused by inhaling dangerous levels of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S). Initially, H2S smells like rotten eggs, but it can quickly anaesthetise your olfactory system, making it undetectable by smell. However, the real issue here lies in the process and control failures. The worker was conducting a routine cleaning of the tank. This was not just an unfortunate accident; it was a severe lapse in procedural safety management. There was a similar incident long ago in Texas where both a husband and wife died, leaving their children behind. How many more deaths are needed before we start to prioritise safety more seriously, myself included? The headline reads, "1 Worker Dead, 2 in ICU." This does not convey the critical message. It should instead read: "Tragic Incident Highlights Crucial Role of Safety Lifecycle Management: Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure at Choa Chu Kang Worksite Claims Life and Hospitalises Two Workers, Underscoring the Vital Work of Safety Consultants."
