I recently had a great chat with Hugh McEwen from Office S&M Architects on our podcast. We dove into whether it's a smooth sail convincing clients to adopt sustainability practices in their renovations or self-build projects. Hugh says "You have to do [an] education process with clients. From a financial aspect, it's looking at what are the longer term costs and longer term benefits of having a comfortable and healthy home. And then also in terms of material, what are the benefits of having things that aren't unnatural or regenerative materials that can achieve better breathability or air quality.” Check out this episode and plenty more in my 'Architects of Ambition' podcast series. We're shining a light on how small architectural firms across the UK are revolutionising residential architecture. They're not just creating houses; they're at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and making spaces uniquely personal. Remi Connolly-Townsend from Remi C.T. Studio explores the broad concept of sustainability in the context of the built environment. It emphasises that sustainability encompasses various aspects, including materials, methods, usage, lifestyle, well-being, and aesthetics of a building. Remi notes that while designers, architects, and consultants have a strong theoretical understanding of sustainability, the challenge lies in applying this knowledge practically in their projects. The focus is on moving from theory to practical implementation in the field of sustainable design and architecture. Adding to this conversation, the ‘Architects of Ambition’ podcast series by Weaver reveals how small architectural practices in the UK are leading the charge in redefining residential architecture. They're not just building homes; they're pioneering in innovation, sustainability, and personalisation. "What we run into most frequently is obviously mobility issues. A lot of our public spaces were designed at a time when that was not taken into account, and so everything from just door thresholds to stairs can be impediments to that. I think that’s probably what most people are familiar with when we say there are accessibility challenges with spaces. What we also find is it’s not just folks who are in wheelchairs who have issues with these impediments in the public realm. It can be everybody from somebody who’s on crutches to somebody who has a stroller. It does make a big impact on the public far beyond just folks who are in wheelchairs." - JA Partner Jack Chaffin Thank you to Buildings for having Jack on your podcast to discuss how JA is designing for more inclusion and accessibility and how these considerations improve the built environment for people of ALL mobilities and ages. #accessibility #podcast #accessible #ADA #inclusive #adaptivereuse #renovations #remodels #buildingimprovements #civicbuildings #civicdesign #libraries #communitycenter #americanswithdisabilitiesact #AECpodcast #constructionpodcast #builtenvironment
