One brain. Two dozen concussions. Four decades. In the next article from Tom Hayes' series detailing his experience in the Aviv Medical Program, he discusses his interactions with Sean Finnegan, an Aviv Alumni who suffered numerous concussions. Sean spent years in the military, in addition to playing college football, and had his "bell rung" more times than he could remember. Sean didn't realize the extent of the damage he experienced because he had a very successful long-term career in the military. Through his pre-assessments, Sean was surprised to learn that these injuries amounted to extremely poor blood flow in his brain; but the good news was there was still blood flow—and that translates to potential for improvement. Concussion prevention is a big deal for me, as a former athlete and a parent with two children that have each had concussions in their respective sports. This is why I am working with PreActive Technologies Inc and hope that some of these grants will help in the vision they have in preventing concussion in sports at the youth, collegiate, and professional level, as well as for our active members of our military. In January, 2024 PreActive Technologies was awarded a 2nd Department of Defense (DOD) grant of $1 Million through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) within the category of Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program. This grant work will be undertaken in conjunction with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the University of Washington. The objective of this study is to show that PreActive’s technology is neuroprotective when subjects are exposed to a Blast force.   This study builds upon the 1st DOD $500K Grant awarded in 2022 and presently underway at the University of Washington. This is a bit of frustrating news. In 2022, the MAA team successfully advocated to create a law allowing military families to receive specialty care referrals BEFORE families moved to a new duty station. This will be a huge help to decrease the unnecessary lapse in medical care between duty stations. It would help improve the military family's quality of life and potentially decrease negative medical outcomes. The law isn't written to be implemented when it is convenient for TRICARE contracts. It was signed into law by President Biden in December 2022 and should not be delayed due to contract negotiations. The MAA team will continue to advocate on behalf of military families with special needs and disabilities.
