Navigating the healthcare system is tough, we’ve all had that experience. Now imagine your doctor has never heard of the condition you have and doesn’t know what treatment to recommend. The treatment you do get prescribed is experimental and not covered by insurance. There are so many barriers and so much isolation within the Rare Disease space. So grateful to be able to tell these stories. And on Rare Disease Day, you can help too! 🙏🏻Reflecting on Gratitude and Healthcare Access in Houston🙏🏻 As a Houstonian, I'm incredibly grateful for the world-class cancer prevention and treatment options available in our city. The Texas Medical Center is a beacon of hope for so many, offering cutting-edge research and top-notch care. But this gratitude comes with a sobering realization: not everyone has equal access to these life-saving resources. Many in our community and beyond face significant barriers due to financial constraints or lack of proper insurance coverage or transportation. We must do better. Here's how we can start: 📍Support local initiatives that provide free cancer screenings and education programs. 📍Advocate for policies that expand healthcare access and affordability. 📍KNOW your state representative and VOTE! 📍Volunteer at or donate to organizations that assist cancer patients with transportation, lodging, and other support services. Remember, prevention is always preferable to cure. I’m here to walk the talk! Let's work together to ensure everyone has the knowledge and resources to prioritize their health through regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and early detection screenings. The Juniper Community Care Hub is an innovative way to help older adults and family caregivers in Minnesota receive the services that they need by providing an influx of resources and other support. It uses a framework that is central to how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Administration for Community Living think about integrating healthcare and social care. According to Simonson: “Minnesota is uniquely positioned to move the hub model to a scale that will have a real impact on the state budget. We're so lucky we have all the ingredients: world-class health systems, thoughtful healthcare payers, innovative government, and a strong network of nonprofit organizations spread throughout our state and supported by one of the country's best philanthropic and volunteer environments. Access to Cancer Care for Low-Income and Uninsured Patients in Dallas County (texascancer.info) I sent this to my family. It has multiple community clinics listed for more than cancer, may have to go through the site.

As part of our commitment to expand access to quality health care, Helmsley has granted $11.6 million to three health systems in Nevada, bringing life-saving #ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) technology for patients in rural communities suffering from acute cardiac and pulmonary failure. The availability of ECMO provides timely medical support to those experiencing severe respiratory and cardiovascular distress who face additional challenges around physician shortages, lack of equipment, and geographic barriers to emergency treatment. The grants will go to Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Siena Hospital, Renown Health Foundation, and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC), funding physician and staff travel to active extracorporeal life support centers, training equipment, consultation services, and other tools for program expansion across the state. “ECMO can be a game changer for patients with severe heart and lung conditions,” said Walter Panzirer, a Helmsley Trustee. “Without ECMO, hospitals have to transfer patients to other facilities, and those who are too unstable for transport could die before receiving needed care.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dSBcE5Eb

Hughes Family Foundation had so much fun at the second annual West Bountiful Car Show supporting Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Thank you to all who participated and attended we can’t wait to come back bigger and better next year! We are honored to donate all of the proceeds from this event to @alzutah 🧡💜 The most recent data shows that: 💜38,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in Utah. 💜9.9% of people aged 45 and older have subjective cognitive decline. 💜112,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Utah. 💜132 million hours of unpaid care provided by Alzheimer’s caregivers. 💜$2.4 billion is the value of the unpaid care. 💜$235 million is the cost of Alzheimer’s to the state Medicaid program. These numbers show that a public health approach is necessary to lessen the burden and enhance the quality of life for those living with cognitive impairment and their families.
