Video essays can make student writing more engaging and effective by combining creativity with technical skills. The Chronicle's article by Michael Blancato and Natalie Kopp illustrates how this medium resonates with students. I believe this approach has enormous potential, but we must carefully balance it with traditional writing to ensure students develop comprehensive skills. #Education #DigitalTransformation #EdTech #StudentEngagement #Innovation

I love assignments like this! One thing to keep in mind is that both students and instructors need support, scaffolding, and an expectations check when assigning multimodal writing assignments. Unless the class is covering video and audio editing the focus for feedback/grading will need to focus more on things like content. Assignments like this would be a great time to utilize some of the aspects of labor based grading.

Happy Monday! Today I want to share "Cripping Writing Processes: Composing (Neuro)Divergently" by Ada Hubrig and Anna Barritt. Ada and Anna share their works-in-progress practice, which honors a more flexible way of #scaffolding the writing process to get beyond an assumed static writing process, which can benefit all students and particularly #neurodivergent students. They write, "we challenge writing instructors to question why we require a rough draft, and to question what counts as evidence of student effort, especially within the context of online writing courses" (p. 214). Not only do I love this practice, but I appreciate how Ada and Anna explain the "why" behind this practice to students in their assignment directions. "The unique construct of evidence-based writing instruction leverages equitable practices more so than any other discipline. Its liberatory power to disrupt reproductive practices that negatively impact students is singular and only closely matched by its reciprocal literacy partner, reading." I am so excited to share this blog written in collaboration with my colleague Nicole Campbell. It was a joy to bring our passions and expertise for writing and culturally responsive practices together and bind them with the research. Please enjoy, share and #repost our commentary on the liberatory impact of evidence-based writing. #collabclass #evidencebasedwriting #culturallyresponsivepractices #fortheCultureandtheCommas https://lnkd.in/ehTNktT4
