“If you meet 100% of the job requirements, don’t apply to the job. You are underselling yourself.” I’m a bit tired of seeing this topic around the internet lately, so I’ll give you all my take on it. In Engineering, if you meet 100% or even 110% of the job requirements, one of two things will happen. 1) You apply for the job, and you negotiate an instant promotion. I’ve done this twice. 2) You apply for the job, and you get your promotion in the first 6 - 12 months. I’ve done this twice as well. When you crush the job requirements, you can set yourself up for a promotion. In most engineering situations (not all), you have the option to level up between 4-7 times (not even including management). You’ll have a hard time hitting a ceiling in tech. So, if you meet all the job requirements, showcase your value and lock in a promotion.
