Earlier this month, regulators signed off on the European Declaration on Cycling in Brussels, marking a major historic milestone for cycling. One of the most ambitious EU-level policy initiatives on cycling to date, the declaration sets out 36 commitments to recognize cycling as a strategic priority across the EU. Additionally, it introduces measures that makes it more complex to backtrack on pro-cycling policies, ensuring that meaningful progress is made to better position cycling within the wider sphere of mobility options. #Transportation #Cycling #Mobility

What has happened to cycling? Great hopes have been placed in increasing cycling, to address both the need to move to net zero and the poor state of our public health by raising exercise levels. Then came the pandemic and empty roads led to an explosion in the uptake of cycling. The hope/expectation was that this would lead to a permanent and large increase in cycling. So while this is true in places like inner London where continuing investment in cycling infrastructure has seen significant increases in the numbers cycling, the picture is not so positive elsewhere. The chart shows the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom's cycling traffic index for England. This is a 12 month moving average with 2013 = 100. As can be seen the surge in cycling during the pandemic has disappeared and by March 2024 cycling levels are below those in March 2019 and notably down on where we would have been if the previous long term trend of slow but positive growth had continued. It would appear the move to get England cycling has stalled and is in danger of going backwards. #Jacobseconomics Cycling traffic Index: England 2013 =100
