What Entrepreneurship looks like on a day to day basis? Simple Hard. I have had many fellow entrepreneurs say this and I echo this sentiment 100%. We need to stop glamorizing entrepreneurship and be open, honest, and candid about our wins, loss, and complete crash landings; doing so could possible save an up and comer thousands of dollars. We can't expect incubators and accelerators to do all the caring and check ins etc. We are entrepreneurs and myself included we need to take better care of each other. Robert Nolan (August 24, 1954 - December 27, 2023) mentored many managers in his years in the industry, but he also did something that few people know: he mentored me in my work at Actors' Equity Association as the touring rep. Most people knew we were close friends but didn’t know about that.   When I took over the road desk, I found that no one at AEA had ever made a deep dive into the economics of the road, and given the growing problem of non-Equity tours, it was past time. I had met Robert through a very controversial arbitration in 1997, and we became friends after. He was a huge part of my life; I relied upon him in so many ways, and we were in touch daily. I only hope he felt the same about me. This post is about our work together, but I could write even more about our fun together, and maybe one day I will.   But back to economics! In 1997, AEA had made some really bad deals for touring shows, to organize them, and the Council and the members were in an uproar. I reached out to two people to help me understand how the road worked, in hopes I could come up with a solution. The first was Robert, who gave me lessons in guarantees, overages, four-walling, and so much else, and remained a resource for me. (The second was Rich Martini - but that’s for another day.) Using what Robert and Rich taught me, I began a process of trial and error to try to find a solution to non-Equity tours. I was still doing so when we had to re-negotiate the Production Contract in 2000. While we weren’t able to fully address the touring issue at that table, Robert and I helped bring about many other solutions; in our private conversations, we would thrash out ideas and take those back to our respective teams.  But when we got to 2004, we knew those negotiations would be so fraught we couldn’t continue that practice. I still remember us sitting at Sardi’s with Maria while we talked it through and agreed that no way would we allow what might happen at the table affect our friendship. And it didn’t.   After 2004, we focused on having fun together, and we had a lot. While I’m not ready to unpack those memories, I know I will cherish them forever. And along with the fun, we continued to be each other’s sounding boards about issues impacting the industry, even when neither of us was involved. Often those conversations were the most fun, as we “solved” all the problems affecting #Broadway and #touring. Robert’s vast experience and his kind but stern heart were what our industry needed, and I know that Wendy and Jeff appreciated that when he came to work at 101 Productions. Our industry is the poorer for his passing.   I am imagining Robert with the others we have lost, watching over us as we do our best to move forward professionally and especially personally. I will hear his voice forever. "No one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville" 😂 You could apply that phrase to a lot of careers, but when I was growing up I certainly didn't want to be a #Recruiter. I'd never come across a Recruiter when I was a kid, besides I had my sights set on being an astronaut or footballer (still holding out hope for that one) 🧑🏻🚀⚽ BUT like most people in recruitment, I fell into Recruitment as I was looking for a way out of the legal system and was fortunate enough that I found my place at QED Legal LLP Recruitment is a great industry to be in however recruitment isn't a walk in the park, the hours can be long, you need to be switched on all the time as one misplaced bit of advice can negatively affect a career just as it can affect it positively, you have to manage a lot of different tasks at once and you need to have a lot of market knowledge. So it certainly isn't your standard 9 - 5 job ⌚ The positives are that you get a genuine chance to affect people's lives for the better and it's totally worth it when you find someone their dream job, you can forge great relationships with clients, I also enjoy having market knowledge to share with any new clients / candidates and of course being rewarded with commission is a great reminder of your hard work 💼 Finding a good Recruiter can be like gold dust and can make a HUGE difference when seeking out a new job.
