The share of the American workforce working from home more than tripled from 2019 to 2021, as a result of COVID-19. In 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 5.7% of working Americans were working from home. But that percentage grew to 17.9% in just two years, reflecting an increase of almost 19 million workers. (US News and US Census). In a recent article that appeared in Forbes Magazine, it is estimated that in the “new normal”, 20% to 30% of all employees are currently working from home or some type of hybrid work schedule with variations across industries and jobs. COVID-19 requirements forever changed the Workplace landscape as business implemented work from home to survive. These work arrangements have remained in place although the COVID-19 Pandemic has been contained. The legacy left by COVID-19 has left many businesses atruggling with the decision of whether or not to bring employees back to work full-time in the office and end remote/hybrid work? Maybe you are considering implementing a hybrid work schedule and end 100% remote schedules? The findings of a survey conducted in July of 2023 may provide you with data to assist you and better inform your decision making process. The survey, found that 77% percent of full-time working women with children under 18 support a hybrid work schedule, and 74% of working women with children under 18 support working from home. The reality is, that it is not that uncommon to be in the office now. According to the latest Workforce Monitor® survey commissioned by the American Staffing Association  and conducted online by The Harris Poll, 68% of Americans prefer a hybrid or in-person work schedule. As companies around the country debate returning to the office, 39% of Americans said that hybrid—a mix of in-person and remote work—was their ideal work schedule. Nearly 32% preferred a fully remote schedule, while 29% of Americans said their ideal work schedule was a full return to the office.

Gallup's latest quarterly employment survey reveals a mixed picture about the state of work. Although they're more engaged at work, remote workers’ connection to the mission and purpose of their employer is at an all-time low…. Could #remotework be evolving into a preference for transactional interactions rather than fostering deep relationships? Are younger generations, accustomed to virtual connections, reshaping the way we perceive work—prioritizing transactions over a sense of #belonging?🤔 Amidst media attention on big companies urging employees back to the office, a recent Flex Index report shows a decline in % US employers mandating full-time in-office work in 2023. Key stats from Gallup include: ✔ Employee engagement is up slightly (34% in mid-2023) after a period of decline, although remote workers' sense of purpose is at an all-time low. ✔Actively disengaged employees have decreased from 18% in 2022 to 16%, resulting in an engaged-to-actively-disengaged employee ratio of 2.1-to-1, up from last year. ✔Although lagging pre-pandemic levels, the basics have seen the greatest improvements: understanding work expectations, access to necessary tools and the chance to leverage individual strengths daily. ✔Only 28% of exclusively remote workers strongly agree with feeling connected—an all-time low, potentially challenging the core tenets of #employeeengagement and loyalty. ✔While equipped with tools for their roles, remote employees' loyalty is down, signaling a transition towards a more gig-like relationship with employers—potentially with implications for employee (and customer) retention, productivity and work quality. So, what can brand leaders do? The #MetoWe continuum of #BrandCitizenship offers some insights: 💡 Empowering trust: Foster a culture of transparency and autonomy, empowering employees to make decisions that contribute to the organizational #purpose. 💡Enriching personal growth: Offer tailored opportunities for skill development and growth, aligning individual aspirations with the organization's mission. 💡Collaborative accountability: Promote a sense of shared responsibility within teams, where success is collectively owned, fostering camaraderie and purpose. 💡Community building: Create virtual meet-ups while also exploring opportunities for employees to engage in real-life activities that align with the organization's social mission and sustainability goals. 💡Meaningful Contribution: Clearly communicate how each remote employee's role directly contributes to the broader purpose of the organization. Remote work preferences are influencing job changes too. 43% who switched jobs since 2022 cited improved remote work policies as a key factor. According to a recent Gallup survey, one-third of hybrid workers (hybrid workers currently represent 33% of the full-time workforce) would quit if required to return to the office full time. Between the need to get work done, and the effort to save lives by avoiding certain kinds of in-person activities, the pandemic forced rapid and remarkable innovation in the workplace and the economy, in general. Now, nearly four years later, changes around opportunities and priorities are proving to be more long-lasting. Our new survey finds nearly 9 out of 10 full-time workers or those looking for full-time work support a 4-day work week, remote work, or hybrid work. And 51% of workers would be willing to change jobs or industries to be able to enjoy that flexibility. The changing nature of work is having revolutionary impacts on everything from commercial real estate to worker pay and, ultimately the broader economy. For leaders and managers, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. How to maintain cultures while ensuring productivity and attracting/retaining talent? 🏢🏡 Where Would You Choose to Work? A Glimpse into Employee Preferences In August 2023, the work landscape in America looked a certain way: 54% of employees predominantly worked onsite, while only 25% enjoyed the benefits of remote work, and 18% followed a hybrid schedule. But what if employees had the power to decide where they work? The data reveals some fascinating insights. 💼 🏡 Employee Preferences: LinkedIn's latest Workforce Confidence Index survey, based on responses from over 9,000 U.S. workers, paints an intriguing picture. When given the choice, only 39% of employees would opt for onsite work, while a majority (58%) desire more flexibility, including a hybrid or fully remote work environment. 👩💼 💼 Generational Differences: Unpacking the data by generations, millennials (ages 27 to 41) emerge as the least enthusiastic about onsite work, with only 35% favoring it. Instead, 33% prefer to work fully remote, and 32% seek the middle ground with a hybrid arrangement. Gen X (ages 43 to 58) leans more towards in-person work, with 40% favoring an onsite presence. 💼 🚀 The Boomer Perspective: Interestingly, half of baby boomers (ages 59 to 77) are content with onsite work. They are among the generations most comfortable with a traditional work setting. It's the oldest and youngest workers who seem less excited about the prospect of working remotely all the time. 🧑💼 💼 The Gen Z Paradox: Here's where it gets intriguing – only 19% of employed Gen Zers (age 26 and under) express a preference for remote work. This generation, sometimes stereotyped as seeking constant flexibility, seems to experience a "professional FOMO." They value the opportunity for face-to-face interactions with senior colleagues and desire in-person experiences that extend beyond the digital realm. This data highlights the evolving landscape of work preferences, with a strong demand for flexibility among employees. Organizations should be attuned to these preferences as they shape the future of work.
